'Stay in your lane!' Kansas City mayor mocks McDonald's after it debuts a 'Kansas City' burger in the UK - setting off a VERY heated transatlantic feud over what really constitutes BBQ

  • On June 18, McDonald's UK announced on Twitter that the chain is serving up a special 'Kansas City Stack' until June 25
  • It has two patties, cheese, bacon, and a bit of 'smoky steakhouse sauce'
  • Sly James, the mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, scolded the chain and included a photo of what a 'real Kansas City burger looks like'
  • Other Americans, those from the Kansas area in particular, also joined in
  • They mocked McDonald's UK's idea of Kansas City BBQ — and also the use of the word 'yeehaw' in the tweet

McDonald's has stirred up a transatlantic Twitter feud this week after launching a Kansas City-themed burger in the UK — horrifying actual Kansas Citians, who say it is way off the mark.

On June 18, McDonald's UK announced on Twitter it would be serving up 'Kansas City Stack' until June 25, posting a photo of the sandwich, which is made with two burgers, cheese, bacon, and a 'smoky steakhouse sauce'.

But Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Sly James was not impressed, urging the fast food chain to 'stay in your lane' before showing McDonald's what a real Kansas City BBQ burger looks like.

'Yeehaw!' the McDonald's UK Twitter account tweeted. 'The Kansas City Stack has arrived. Available until 25th June.'

'Stay in your lane (which is on the wrong side of the road, btw),' Mayor James replied.

'Here's what a real #KansasCity burger looks like. There's a lot more where that came from,' he said, adding the hashtags #bbq and #noonesaysyeehawhere.

He also included a photo of a burger drenched in BBQ sauce, with pulled pork and coleslaw heaped on top.'

The tweet soon caught the attention of other people from in and around Kansas City, who were equally affronted by the 'Kansas City Stack' served up by McDonald's.

'An awful representation of Kansas City BBQ,' wrote one.

And another: 'If you think this represents #KC, you've been smoking more than your sauce.'

Hard pass: Hundreds of people have called out McDonald's, with even the Kansas City tourism account schooling the chain on what Kansas City BBQ looks like

'We love our friends across the pond but please understand this isn't really KC BBQ,' wrote another. 'FOR SHAME MC'd. Those in the UK PLEASE come visit we'd be more than happy to feed you all kinds of good food and show you our beautiful city. PS yeehaw isn't really in our everyday vocabulary.'

'In what universe does two beef patties and some bacon qualify as “a taste of KC?”' wrote another. 'Unless you smoked some brisket or beef ribs for 14+ hours and ground *that* into your patties, no. Just no.'

'That’s just a bacon double cheeseburger with steak sauce (yuck) on it. There is nothing “Kansas City” about it. Do your homework, KC is about BBQ,' said one more.

'Everyone in Kansas City is deeply offended right now, MYSELF INCLUDED,' said another critic.

Several posted horrified reaction GIFs, while a few shared more photos of what real Kansas City BBQ looks like.

No one says that! A few claimed to be offended, while others took particular issue with the word 'yeehaw' in the McDonald's tweet

Quite a few also took issue with the account's use of the word 'yeehaw,' pointing out that absolutely no one in Kansas City says that.

'Not sure I've heard someone say "yee haw" in Kansas City. Ever. In my life,' wrote one.

'Hi — travel writer and Kansas Citian here. "Yeehaw" is definitely not a part of our local parlance, FYI. Come visit sometime and we'll show you real barbecue,' wrote another.

Q39, a BBQ restaurant in Kansas City, wrote, 'Yeehaw, mate!' and 'No one messes with KC BBQ!'
