A man has been charged after he allegedly punched a detective thrice in the face and kicked an unmarked police car. Two detectives were travelling in the police car when the 40-year-old man allegedly assaulted the driver through an open window at a traffic light in Newcastle's CBD, about 161km from Sydney. Police said the officers were preventing the man, who had 'unleashed a violent outburst' towards the occupants of a nearby car on Beaumont Street on Friday morning.

A woman who nearly lost her life after a freeway sign fell on her car was horrified after learning it was missing crucial parts and skipped safety checks. Nella Lettieri (pictured left), 55, was driving along the Tullamarine Freeway in Melbourne on January 8 when a sign came loose and fell on top of her Hyundai (right), caving in the roof. New reports have shown the sign that left Ms Lettieri suffering traumatic flashbacks didn't have a vital steel plate in its gantry and missed mandatory inspections.

Nearly 2,000 people stripped off and braved near-freezing waters for a midwinter dip to mark the shortest day of the year.  A record-breaking 1915 people took the chilly winter solstice plunge in Hobart's River Derwent on Saturday morning. An orange flare was fired at 7.42am - the sunrise signal for red-capped swimmers to drop their towels and streak for the water.

Cheeky punters have cooked a left over meat tray (pictured bottom right) on a pub's gas heaters (pictured top right) in a hilarious video.   Importer Beau Rumple (pictured left), 36, and his mates Sean, Megsy and Kohei were on a boys night out when he came up with the ingenious idea at Belrose Hotel in Sydney's Northern Beaches on Saturday night.  'One of the old boys won the meat tray and left it behind so we decided to make the most out of it,' Mr Rumple told Daily Mail Australia. 'The boys had to be fed.'

The property market for most millennials is a daunting prospect but one savvy investor has turned his love of Lego into a different kind of bricks. Josh Mangleson, 25, from Brisbane began collecting Lego as a child but it wasn't until he began looking for new sets to buy online that he realised his old childhood toys might be worth some money.  Josh then began investing in more Lego sets and selling them online for a profit. 

Shocking video shows the moment an out-of-control car crosses into the wrong lane before hitting a parked car and flipping onto its roof.  The car was travelling along Chapel Road in Bankstown about 10.30am on Saturday, when the driver appeared to lose control and career into oncoming traffic. Nearby shop owners raced to help the P-plate driver, who was trapped in the overturned car, after the dramatic crash.

In his new book Motel - Images of Australia on Holidays comedian, radio host and TV presenter Tim 'Rosso' Ross captures the heyday of Australia's motels via a deep trawl through the National Archives of Australia. The book is a pictorial love letter to a bygone era (1950 to 1989), capturing the 'accessible glamour and car-friendly convenience' of the road-side motel, from Gold Coast palaces to country comfort stops. Pictured clockwise from main are an unnamed motel in Alice Springs, the El Dorado in Surfers Paradise, the Riverfront in Hobart, the Riviera on the Gold Coast and the Oakleigh in Melbourne. 'In a land where the car has provided us with the ultimate freedom to hit the road and explore, it is no surprise that Australians wholeheartedly embraced the American concept of the motel,' Ross writes. 'When they began springing up here in the 1950s, they represented a stylish and sophisticated way to travel.'

Two Australians took deadly snakes out of their cages to give them some exercise and a bit of sun. Adelaide snake catcher Simon Adamczyk said he had a total of seven snakes, including the venomous red-bellied, out in the courtyard of his Melrose Park home over a period of three hours on Friday. Mr Adamczyk said none of the snakes have been defanged and he gives them similar exercises once or twice a week.

This summer marks the 60th anniversary of the American National Exhibition in Moscow that was intended to promote cultural understanding between the two sparring super powers at the height of the Cold War. Western Australia competitor Julia Edwards is set to share her controversial views no matter what the question is because she's not there to 'please everyone'. 'It's not about taking sides in the political debate,' the 21-year-old told Perth Now. The Russian native said that their job should not be taken lightly because they are constantly scrutinised and sometimes feel pressure to mould into what the public wants. She is now completing her degree in Psychology and Marketing at the University of Western Australia, while also working in the fashion industry.

Dutch photographer Thijs Broekkamp undoubtedly risked his life to take these pictures. They show everyday life in Afghanistan - jolly traders, children playing in mosques, commuters lost in thought - innocent scenes that stand in stark contrast to the horrifying images that make the headlines. But still, Broekkamp stresses that for Westerners it's 'near impossible and very dangerous to travel by yourself' there and neither he nor his guide told anyone about his itinerary - not even the police.
