In her second episode with Dr. Berlin the 36-year-old revealed that she had to be induced at 36 weeks after she was diagnosed with the liver disease Cholestasis. The disease often is diagnosed in late stages of pregnancy and poses potential harm to the unborn baby.

She was in labor at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles for three days and had an epidural, though she originally wanted a natural home birth. She then underwent a c-section after she developed a fever of 102 degrees.

'I was so scared to have the c-section...,' Mara said. 'I was genuinely terrified of what that meant and what could happen and all of these things, and then of course just being tired made me that much more scared, I think.

'Right before I went in for the c-section, that’s when I sort of [felt] the devastation of it and the disappointment of not being able to experience a birth any way that I had hoped.'

The 24 actress said, 'I was just super sad, I remember that moment very clearly because I burst out crying and was like, "I’m scared."'

The procedure safely delivered the baby into her arms. Though the new mom experienced 'terrible shakes' from pre-surgery medication, her 'eyes rolling back,'  and excess bleeding that required a blood transfusion.

'But also, I was like, "When am I going to stop shaking?"' she told Dr Berlin. 'I thought my teeth were going to pop out, my jaw was clenched so tight from the shakes, and then I thought, "I definitely can’t hold her because I can’t move." My arms were locked.'

It was her new daughter that comforted her during the ordeal, she said it was 'totally comforting' to hear her first noises.

Her husband and Fantastic Four co-star, 33, that first introduced the mother and daughter.

'My husband brought her over to me and he kind of held her on my chest and it was amazing, but it was not at all what I imagined it would be,' she said. 'I could barely keep my eyes open to look at her.'

For him the complications were a 'cruel u-turn' in an otherwise easy pregnancy.

Bell saw his role shift to being an 'advocate' for his wife as she leaned on him for what to do.

'She would look to me and go, "Tell them what to do." Which was … I mean, I love that I was given that position, but also it was a terrifying one,' he said. 'Because I’m no doctor. I’m not inside of her body. It was a role of real responsibility.'

Though their baby girl’s birth didn’t go as planned, Mara said she 'wouldn’t do anything differently' because she arrived safely: 'We really did do everything in our power to make it as peaceful and natural and easy for our baby to come out as possible.'
