The Governor of the Bank of England says firms which invest in risky assets that are hard to sell in a hurry pose a growing risk to the financial system. In blistering comments after withdrawals were blocked at Woodford's flagship Equity Income fund, Carney said ordinary savers are being misled about how their nest eggs are used.

ASK TONY: Amazon agreed a refund on two recliner chairs that it picked up March - but I still haven't received my money back!
I ordered two recliner chairs from Amazon costing £99 plus postage. On trying them I found that my wife, who like me is in her 80s, was unable to fasten the tilt-securing mechanism as her wrists are not strong enough. Amazon agreed they could be returned for a refund. They texted both me and the Market Place trader to confirm this. A courier picked them up and gave me a receipt. My refund did not arrive so I contacted Amazon who informed me it would be thoroughly investigated by their A-Z guarantee team. I have been trying since March to get a refund but unfortunately I'm getting nowhere.

MARKET REPORT: Asset manager Jupiter Fund Management on front foot after Peel Hunt analysts turn positive on shares
Peel Hunt upgraded its recommendation to 'buy' from 'hold' and raised its target price to 480p from 375p after the FTSE 250 funds firm pinched a contract from crisis-hit Neil Woodford. The City broker said Jupiter's flows have stabilised after a rocky 2018, although some of the larger funds are still declining and the investment performance is relatively mixed. Peel Hunt noted that the shares have recovered since the start of the year but don't look particularly expensive. Jupiter gained 3.5 per cent, or 14.5p, to 426.5p. Its assets under management is likely to receive an uplift from a contract to run Openwork's £317m Omnis Income & Growth fund.

My £830 dis-loyalty bonus! How to profit from banks so keen to attract new customers that they offer you free cash
They know that few people can be bothered to switch accounts, and many customers often falsely believe that staying loyal to one bank means they will get a better deal. Finding offers is easy. Just search 'bank account switching offers' online and you find lists of deals on websites such as ours. Individual banks also advertise any new switching deals on their websites. Most offers are open to all new customers, but if you have recently held an account with the bank you may find you are excluded so check the small print.
Is your pension ready for a 100-year life? The average worker will need a pot of £447,000 at 65 to maintain a good income until death, study says
The study assumes someone on an average annual UK salary of £28,000 who wants to retire at 65 years old and who wants an annual retirement income of £20,000. To achieve that they will need to have accumulated a pot of £447,000 by age 65 to maintain that annual payout until they get 100 years old, says investment firm AJ Bell.
Can you modify a car on finance? Here's why one YouTuber was stung with a bill for thousands for souping-up a BMW
YouTuber Riccardo Senior (inset) received a letter from his car finance provider telling him that he had breached his agreement by making performance modifications to his BMW M4 and threatened to recover the vehicle unless he paid the remaining finance up front, which amounted to thousands of pounds. We asked expert Graham Hill to explain why you can't make changes to a financed vehicle without the consent of the provider.

City watchdog claims Neil Woodford stretched financial rules to breaking point in months before crisis erupted
The stock picker was accused of using loopholes to avoid breaching the limit on how many 'illiquid' - or difficult to trade - stocks could be part of his portfolio. Andrew Bailey, who is chief executive of the Financial Conduct Authority, told MPs the Woodford Equity Income fund had been 'sailing close to the wind' and 'using the rules to the full' in a desperate bid to stave off crisis.
High Street sales suffer their biggest fall for more than a decade as miserable weather takes its toll
In a sign of the mounting crisis afflicting town centres across the country, the CBI said June was the worst month for retailers since the depths of the financial crisis in March 2009. A separate report revealed supermarkets also suffered as a result of unseasonably cool temperatures, causing sales of ice cream, beer and burgers to tumble. And department store John Lewis revealed a 2.4 per cent fall in sales in the week to June 22 as demand for clothes, homewares and electrical goods declined.

I'm 65 and drawing my company pension, but still work: Should I carry on paying into the scheme? Steve Webb replies
My company has just informed me that it has automatically put me back into its pension scheme from 1 June, but I can opt out if I do not want to be in it. My annual salary is £41,000, my pension contribution is 6 per cent, and the company contribution is 12 per cent. My intention is to retire at the end of 2020, so is it worth still paying in now?
The last time unemployment was this low was 1974: So how did 70s Britain crumble from economic success to power cuts, inflation and rubbish in the streets?
Unemployment was at a record low in 1974, as it is today. But when we recall Britain in the 70s - the decade of (clockwise from top left) the Ford Capri, rubbish piled up in the streets, Prime Minister Ted Heath and the miners' strike - we often think of nationwide hardship. It is characterised by union unrest, the three-day week and sky-high inflation. But, economically speaking, it wasn't all bad - especially not at the start. It was only towards the end of the decade that the troubles which colour most people's perception of the 70s really kicked off.

Drivers face a £116 annual premium to go green: Electric cars are 14% more expensive to insure than similar petrols and diesels

There's almost a £200 difference in premium costs for a VW Golf and e-Golf. With an estimated two million motorists expected to own electric cars by 2025, insurers will be raking in an extra £321 million a year from drivers, the research has calculated.

'Budget airline without the cheap prices': British Airways refuses a bottle of water for mother in a £1,226 seat
It was once considered the best airline in the world, setting the gold standard for service and comfort and pioneering the supersonic Concorde planes. But now British Airways has been accused of acting like a 'budget airline without the cheap prices' after refusing a bottle of water to a 33-year-old mother who was breastfeeding her baby. The new mum, who had paid hundreds of pounds extra to sit in 'premium' class on a 12-hour flight with her husband and six-month-old daughter, was told bottled water was a perk reserved for business class passengers only.

From not spreading your money around to tinkering too often: Seven bad financial habits DIY investors must break
When it comes to investing in the stock market, the British public have never had it so easy. But being able to invest and building a portfolio that's made to last are not the same thing. Investors who put their faith, and the vast bulk of their long-term savings, in fund manager Neil Woodford's hands have learned this lesson to their cost. How much do I need to save for my pension? A quick guide to retirement saving...
The amount you can save into a pension ultimately depends on what you can afford - but the longer you leave it the more you will need to save. What next for interest rates? Bank tipped to hold for most of 2019, as inflation stays low and Brexit is extended
Lower than expected inflation figures have added weight to expectations that interest rate rises will remain on hold throughout most of 2019. This combined with the Brexit extension is forecast to keep monetary policy steady, with rates held at 0.75 per cent. While unemployment is low and wages are rising, there are still concerns over Britain's consumer economy and business investment being stalled by continuing Brexit uncertainty.
What next for mortgage rates? Bank of England says rates will rise
Two-year fixes have plateaued in price over the past few months, following a prolonged period of falling rates thanks to fierce competition among lenders. But longer-term fixes have continued to fall, narrowing the gap between two and five-year deals, according to research from financial experts Moneyfacts.
