'They are not polyamorous': Filmmaker Louis Theroux reveals what he REALLY thought of cousin Justin's relationship with Hollywood star Jennifer Aniston

Documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux doesn't often speak about his Hollywood actor cousin Justin, but made a rare exception on Tuesday night.

During an interview with Australian TV show The Project, Louis was asked what he thought of Justin's high-profile relationship with Friends star Jennifer Aniston.

'What was it like when your cousin was dating the most famous woman in the world, Jennifer Aniston?' asked presenter Lisa Wilkinson.

Louis offered a surprisingly candid response, referencing Justin's previous long-term girlfriend, costume designer Heidi Bivens.

He said: 'I think the main thing I thought was: "Oh, too bad. I guess he broke up with Heidi." I guess I just thought about that relationship ending.

'My immediate next thought was like: "That's kind of cool, that he is going out with someone famous."'

Louis added that he was impressed by Jennifer when they finally met.

'She seems really nice for what I can tell,' he said. 'Then, later on, I met her a few times and she always struck me as great.'

The Project's Lisa then joked that Louis could help bring Justin and Jennifer, who married in 2015 and separated in 2017, back together.

'She's loved. I think everyone wants Jen to be happy. We thought she had it with Justin. Can you talk to him please?' she said.

Rather than answer that question straight away, Louis made reference to polyamory, which is the subject of one of his new documentaries.

He began, 'One of the things I learned when I made a documentary about polyamory...', before hastening to add: 'They [Justin and Jennifer] are not polyamorous!

'[I learned that] you don't judge relationships by their longevity. You judge them by the amount of happiness they produce.'

Jennifer and Justin got engaged in August 2012, and they married in an intimate ceremony at their LA home on August 5, 2015.

They announced their separation in a statement to the Associated Press in late 2017.

In an interview with The New York Times in September 2018, Justin spoke about the 'gentle yet heartbreaking' demise of their two-year marriage.

'The good news is that was probably the most - I'm choosing my words really carefully - it was kind of the most gentle separation, in that there was no animosity,' he said.

'It's more like, it's amicable. It's boring, but, you know, we respected each other enough that it was as painless as it could be. It was heartbreaking only in the sense that the friendship would not be the same, as far as just the day to day,' he added.

'But the friendship is shifting and changing, you know, so that part is something that we're both very proud of.'

Earlier that same month, Jennifer - who divorced Brad Pitt in 2005 - discussed single life and hinted that fertility issues might have been an issue with her split from Justin in the September edition of InStyle magazine.

'It's pretty crazy,' she said. 'The misconceptions are "Jen can't keep a man", and "Jen refuses to have a baby because she's selfish and committed to her career." Or that I'm sad and heartbroken.'

She continued: 'First, with all due respect, I'm not heartbroken. And second, those are reckless assumptions. No one knows what's going on behind closed doors.

'No one considers how sensitive that might be for my partner and me. They don't know what I've been through medically or emotionally.

'There is a pressure on women to be mothers, and if they are not, then they're deemed damaged goods. Maybe my purpose on this planet isn't to procreate. Maybe I have other things I'm supposed to do.'
