Glastonbury 2019: First acts take to the stage in 84F heat

Revellers at Glastonbury have hit out at organisers for failing to provide enough water stations as dozens are treated for heat-related illnesses by paramedics during one of the event's hottest ever days. Festivalgoers demanded that more drinking stations were set up amid 'ridiculous' queues (shown top left) as temperatures reached a balmy 84F in Somerset. Paramedic teams from South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said it has treated 70 patients over the past two days, mostly for heat stroke. Hundreds of thousands have donned both their best summer outfits and lashings of free suncream handed over by organisers as they prepare to be entertained by the likes of Stormzy and George Ezra at Worthy Farm. Regular attendees of the festival are used to being welcomed by mud slides and damp conditions, however this year many have been able to relax and slip off their wellies while topping up their tans.

The temperature was recorded in the southern village of Villevieille and beat the previous record for France of 111.4F (44.1C) recorded in Saint-Christol-les-Ales and Conqueyrac in 2003.

G20 summit 2019: May orders Putin to stop 'destabilising' meddling

A furious Theresa May confronted Vladimir Putin and told him to stop Russia's 'irresponsible and destabilising' meddling in world affairs during a frosty meeting at the G20 summit in Japan. Mrs May used the showdown to attempt to order the Russian President to modify his behaviour but her attempts were partially overshadowed by a scathing attack on the West launched by Mr Putin before they met. The stage was set for a particularly sour face-to-face meeting after the Russian President criticised Western views on gay rights, immigration and multiculturalism. But it got off to an even worse than expected start as an indignant and stony-faced Mrs May, apparently angry at Mr Putin's assault on European 'liberalism', barely looked at her opposite number as they shook hands.

Vladimir Putin has taken aim at the race to succeed Theresa May as he questioned how a democratic country could install a new prime minister without a national vote.
