Amy Adams' The Woman in the Window's release date is pushed back to next year amid confused audiences during test screenings

Disney has delayed the release date of The Woman in the Window, a forthcoming crime drama starring Amy Adams and Gary Oldman, thru next year after audiences reported being confused during test screenings.

The 44-year-old actress stars in the upcoming motion picture, which is adapted from A.J. Finn's hit 2018 novel, produced by Scott Rudin and directed by Joe Wright.

Wright is seeking to re-shoot scenes for five days next month - a time when Amy is available to work - following the poor feedback in trial screenings, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film is set to be the last from Fox 2000, which Disney obtained this past March; the division's president Elizabeth Gabler noted that the studio was 'dealing with a complex novel' in a statement confirming the delay.

'We tested the movie really early for that very reason,' Gabler said. 'We wanted to make it better, and we've had Disney's full support in doing that.'

Adams' character Anna Fox in the movie is 'an agoraphobic woman living alone in New York' who 'begins spying on her new neighbors only to witness a disturbing act of violence,' according to a studio synopsis.

The six-time Oscar nominee stars in the film alongside Academy Award winners Oldman and Julianne Moore, with Brian Tyree Henry, Anthony Mackie and Wyatt Russell rounding out the cast.

The motion picture was slated to be released October 4, which in the industry is considered a strong date for award season hopefuls with significant commercial potential.

The studio Fox 2000, which is shuttering amid the purchase, had previously had success with adaptations including 2016's Hidden Figures and 2006's The Devil Wears Prada.

Aside from The Woman in the Window, Fox 2000 has The Art of Racing in the Rain, starring Kevin Costner, Amanda Seyfried, Milo Ventimiglia, due out next month.
