When asked a series of questions about her effortless glamour, the thespian said she is very low maintenance.

Dame Helen recalled: 'I do often cut my own hair.'

Referring to her 'glam squad' ahead of her television interview, she added: 'I said to my brilliant hair guy here, Stefan, "The cut I have right now Stefan is something that I did with the kitchen scissors about a week ago in my kitchen.

'So you know, maybe you could clean it up a bit for me?"'

Elsewhere in the interview, the L’Oréal Paris brand ambassador shared: 'I have an issue with the word "beauty". Because we’re not all beautiful, I’m not beautiful and I recognise that fact.'

Speaking candidly she added: 'Sometimes I clean up nice with a lot of help… So I want a new word instead of "beautiful". I think "being" is a good word.

Helen continued: 'My being tip is really to be curious and interested in other people. And not think too much about yourself.

'Give your attention to other people. And that has a way of making you, if you like, more beautiful in many ways.'

The actress also revealed that she does not like her appearance without make-up as she shared: 'I don’t like the look of myself without make up at all.'

Sharing that she often goes out make-up free, the star explained: 'I forget I haven't got make up on then I go out.'

Helen also said she is glad she has had her eyebrows permanently tattooed on as she loves how they transform her morning routine.

She told: 'The great thing about the tattooing is that when I get up in the morning, I look as if I’ve got a face. It’s amazing the difference it makes, so I'm a big fan of that.'

On her health and exercise regime, Helen admitted she is not eating well or working out at present

The screen star explained: 'I go through periods of exercise, I’m not in the period right now. I go through periods of eating very well, I’m not in that period right now either.

'I do very strongly believe that you have to keep realigning yourself physically with diet or exercise and then it can all go pear-shaped again and then you’ve got to pull it back again.'

Helen recently opened-up on he still feels 'intimidated' when she walks on to movie sets.

Speaking on the My Self Worth podcast, Mirren said: 'Those negative thoughts are always lurking there under the surface… everybody feels this way, you aren’t the only one.'

'What always comes up in my head is that ‘I’m boring, I’m stupid, I’m not exciting enough’.

She carried on with how she felt 'incredibly intimidated' with 'these humongous movie stars' when she walked on to a film set.

But just like the rest of us she battles her inner critic by giving herself a pep talk.

She revealed on the podcast: 'Sometimes I lock myself in the loo to give myself a talking to: "you can do it Helen, don’t worry, you can do it!’”
