The BBC was fighting to contain a growing crisis last night after a top executive at the Corporation appeared to accuse news reader Dan Walker (together, main) for the on-going racism row. David Jordan, the BBC's director of editorial policy and standards, last night defended the controversial decision to reprimand Naga Munchetty for criticising inflammatory remarks made by Donald Trump (bottom right). Mr Jordan claimed Ms Munchetty's co-host Mr Walker's contribution to the debate was 'not helpful', adding: 'It could be said that Dan Walker kind of led Naga Munchetty to the conclusion that she eventually made.' To add to the confusion last night, senior BBC bosses including director-general Lord Tony Hall (bottom left) wrote a letter to staff claiming Ms Munchetty was 'justified' in speaking out.

No Brexit is worse than no deal says Sajid Javid

Failure to deliver Brexit could irreparably 'tear the fabric' of society and even a No Deal would be better than no Brexit, Sajid Javid (left and right) claimed on Friday night. In an interview with the Daily Mail on the eve of the Conservative Party conference, Mr Javid said: 'The best way to bring the country back together again and heal things is to deliver on that referendum. We can't have this debate going on. We've had the referendum, it was the biggest democratic exercise in the history of our country. And we have to honour it.' Mr Javid insisted the Prime Minister would still press ahead with the planned departure on October 31, regardless of whether a deal had been struck. The Chancellor insisted his relationship with Mr Johnson was very strong, despite talk of tensions following the sacking of his aide. On the topic of Islamic State bride Shamima Begum, Mr Javid said she should remain banned from Britain, despite her claim that she now 'hates' the terror group.

Princess Margaret, her lover and me

ANN GLENCONNER: One day, in 1993, the man whom Princess Margaret had once passionately wanted to marry came to have lunch with her at Kensington Palace. It was 40 years since she'd last seen him. I happened to be there at the time, watching from a window as Peter Townsend, now a very old man, got out of his car and slowly made his way to the door. Back in the Fifties, when they'd fallen in love, he'd been her father's equerry and a dashing war hero 16 years her senior. But he was also divorced - and a marriage between a divorcee and a member of the Royal Family was considered scandalous at the time.

Greta Thunberg hits out at 'people who want to silence us' at Montreal climate rally

Greta Thunberg said she didn't understand why grown-ups and world leaders would mock children and teens for acting on science, at a press conference ahead of a climate rally in Montreal Friday (left). Initial turnout estimates of the Montreal protest stretched to half a million people, organisers said. When asked about U.S. President Donald Trump and others who have mocked her, the 16-year-old activist said they likely feel their world view and interests are being threatened by the climate activism of herself and others. 'That we should take as compliment that we are having so much impact that people want to silence us,' she said at a rally in Montreal after meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. 'We've become too loud for people to handle so people want to silence us.' Thousands later chanted 'Greta! Greta!' as she spoke at an afternoon rally in Montreal. 'We will do everything in our power to stop this crisis from getting worse even if that means skipping school or work,' she said. 'The people have spoken. And we will continue to speak until our leaders listen and act. We are the change and change is coming.' Earlier in the day, the young climate activist met with Trudeau (bottom right), who praised her activism on climate change. Marchers also turned out in Italy (bottom left), Australia (bottom centre), and South Korea (bottom right) among other countries.

Donald Trump claims CIA agent was 'partisan operative' and not a whistle-blower at all

Donald Trump again speculated Friday that the whistle-blower who filed a complaint against him is a 'partisan operative' who intentionally twisted second-hand information. He said the claims about his call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was so off base, the unidentified person who submitted the complaint is not likely to qualify for protections provided by federal whistle-blower statutes. 'Sounding more and more like the so-called Whistleblower isn't a Whistleblower at all. In addition, all second hand information that proved to be so inaccurate that there may not have even been somebody else, a leaker or spy, feeding it to him or her? A partisan operative?' he stated. The whistle-blower has been identified by several news outlets as a male CIA operative detailed to the White House. The person is likely an expert on Ukraine, based on the level of detail in the complaint. Both the name of the person and the person's source are a mystery that Trump and numerous news outlets are speedily attempting to unravel. Trump told U.S. diplomats Thursday he suspected the whistle-blower's source was a spy within his government.
