'I was so depressed': Shakira feared she would never sing again after vocal cord hemorrhage in 2017

She's set to star with Jennifer Lopez in the Super Bowl LIV halftime show in Miami on February 2.

But just a couple of years ago, Shakira feared she might never sing again after a vocal cord hemorrhage in 2017 caused her to lose her voice.

The Colombian singer, 42, told The Guardian newspaper: 'I never thought that my voice would leave me..... It was my identity. So when I couldn’t sing, that was unbearable. There were times I couldn’t even get out of bed – I was so depressed.'

In order to try and recover her voice and limit damage, Shakira said she went through periods where she didn't speak at all.

She described herself during that time as 'pessimistic' and 'bitter.'

'Either I needed surgery or divine intervention,' she explained.

Doctors recommended she have surgery but the hitmaker resisted, instead turning to meditation, hypnosis and holy water from Lourdes.

In the end, her voice returned without surgery, something she told The Guardian that 'felt like I was having some kind of religious experience'.

JLo recently told Extra that she and Shakira are working together to create an 'impactful' Super Bowl halftime show.

'Shakira and I have spoken a few times already. She's putting her thing together, I'm putting my thing together, thinking about who we want to join us on stage, if we want that,' Lopez, 50, said.

'We are super excited,' she added. 'We want to make a beautiful, impactful, enjoyable, fun show for everybody. We want to bring everybody together. That's the point. We as artists have that rare gift to be able to do that, and that's what I think our main goal is.'
