Killing Eve fans were left in shock on Sunday evening and Monday morning when a beloved character was killed in the season three debut. 

The show hit BBC America on Easter Sunday before landing on BBC iPlayer the following morning, after which shockwaves were sent over the death. 

Viewers swarmed social media to lament the death with fans writing: '[They] deserved better... [They] didn't deserve that... OMG They killed [***]!' yet lead writer Suzanne Heathcote insisted the death was key to the plot.

Sean Delaney's character Kenny Stowton meets a sticky end in the new series as he is murdered by a mystery assailant amid his investigation of The Twelve.

Eve - played by Sandra Oh - arrived to meet Kenny before seeing a body fly past the window, only to discover Kenny's lifeless corpse outside. 

Speaking ahead of the death scene, writer Suzanne said: 'It’s hard because Kenny’s so beloved and understandably so. Sean is a brilliant actor as well. It’s always hard making those decisions...

'The reality is it’s because he’s such a beloved character and because Eve has such an emotional connection to him that (the death) has the impact that it has...

The new series of the show has been released two weeks earlier than scheduled as a special gift for fans battling lockdown boredom.

Speaking of the move, Sandra said: 'Particularly right now, this month in North America, and I am sure for you guys as well, is a really tough time'.

'So, if we can throw out some extra fun and devilish sunshine then I am really happy that we can provide that,' the Grey's Anatomy star added. 

Sandra, who plays British Intelligence agent Eve Polastri in the BBC thriller, went on to explain the pressure she faced to make the new season unique and interesting.

'It's very challenging creatively to continue being on the edge of new,' she said

Over the past two series we’ve seen intriguing Russian contract killer Villanelle (Jodie Comer) obsess over British Intelligence agent Eve Polastri - and vice versa.

The pair oscillate between capturing each other, killing each other and falling in love with each other.

The cliffhanger finale of series two ended with Villanelle shooting Eve and leaving her for dead, after the assassin imagined living with Eve together in Alaska.

The new series begins six months on, with Villanelle apparently retired from the game, living in Barcelona and about to marry for the first time.
