Brad Pitt stunned a longtime friend with a complete renovation of her garage on the Monday premiere of HGTV's new show Celebrity IOU.

He asked Property Brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott, 41, to overhaul the space for his pal Jean Black, a makeup artist with whom he'd worked on more than 40 films.

But doing the project also brought back funny memories of the jobs they'd done together.

When the trio entered her garage, which was full of 41 cases of makeup, Jonathan joked that he saw a box marked 'butt makeup,' and Brad wondered if there really was some.

'There was a time on Legends Of The Fall when she had to make up my butt because of bad tan lines,' Brad, 56, admitted, referring to the 1994 film. 'And when it comes up, we can't really look each other in the eye.' 

Brad told the Property Brothers they had just three weeks to work on the Santa Monica, California, space, while Jean was out of town on a movie set.

When he first met the twins, Brad said he was 'gonna take a stab' at guessing who was who, and got it wrong, before correcting himself and vowing to never mess it up again.

'I will be honest,' Drew told the Oscar winner. 'When you called us, like, ''Hey, this is Brad Pitt,'' I thought it was a prank call, and I was gonna hang up.'

Brad explained that he reached out to them because he wanted to help his 'dear old friend' make a change she had talked about for years.

'There's people in your life that fate brings together, and I'm forever grateful,' he told them, noting that he and Jean met on a film set nearly three decades ago.

'She's family,' he emphasized. 'We're like brother and sister. We bicker, we fight. If I'm on the Westside, I'll often pit stop here, get a nap on the couch. Many people do. Jean's just one of those kind of nucleuses that we all orbit around.'

The actor explained that he and Jean had got 'stuck together' on her second job, which also happened to be one of his first acting gigs.

Jean fondly remembered the day they met. 'They called me and said, ''We have a new kid that's coming in, an actor,' she shared. 'I remember I called Brad, and I said, ''Do you want anything? Do you need anything special?'' And he just said, ''Bring great music.''

She admitted that she stayed in the makeup industry in large measure because of Brad and her other clients, like actress Julia Roberts and actor Josh Brolin, both 52, who made her laugh.

Brad observed that whenever he felt like he 'tanked' a scene in a film, Jean would be the one to tell him it was okay, and that she was 'always there, not just for me, but for anyone.'

'I don't even have the words to describe what a value she's been to me in my life,' he confirmed. 'I love her with all my heart, and to be able to do this for her is a dream.'

Jean had been trying to turn her detached garage into a guesthouse and workspace for 10 years, Brad said, 'but it was never gonna happen unless the brothers came in here and got the thing done.'

He sensed that most of Jean's makeup stash was from the Coen Brothers' films on which she had worked, and he came after that, then Julia and everyone else.

The garage needed guesthouse capability with a bathroom and kitchenette, plus a makeup station and storage, Brad added, impressing the brothers with his knowledge of local codes.

'I love the sound of a construction site,' Brad revealed. 'If I'm not building, I'm dying. I walk into a space and just see the possibilities. And this garage has been driving me crazy for the 15 years she's been here, 'cause there's so much potential.'

To accomplish what Brad wanted, the brothers would add an extension to the back of Jean's garage and install a Murphy bed sofa-unit, then tuck a 'spa-worthy bathroom' behind a TV wall. A new walk-in closet would amplify storage, and a full kitchen would be added. The kitchen island would double as a makeup 'peninsula,' and boast a remote-control vanity mirror.

'She'll lose her mind,' Brad promised them.

When demo started, the actor was right there with the designers, all of them throwing sledgehammers at smiley-faced characters spray-painted on the garage's back wall.

'I think he outsmashed us,' Jonathan said, as Brad joked that he would let the brothers 'handle the dirty stuff.'

They flew through the demolition, opening the space up and even getting ahead of schedule.

Brad had to go out of town, but advised on the finishes for Jean's garage first, suggesting they carry through the 'washed-out taupes and pewters' she had in her main house.

'I'm extremely tactile,' he noted, explaining that he liked to focus on building materials and how they felt and related to each other almost more than decoration itself.

He emphasized a clean, simple palette for Jean's space, but also wanted to 'pull her into the future just a little bit.'

'She really has no idea the potential of that little shack,' he noted. 'Seems like they're going to bring some life to that place.'

When there was a day left to the reveal, Brad returned to check out the space.

'It's almost like it's a double reveal,' Drew affirmed. 'We're gonna reveal to Brad, and then we're gonna reveal to Jean. It's exciting. Nerve-wracking.'

Brad covered his mouth in disbelief when he walked in, saying, 'Oh my god. This is hilarious. Wow. This is hilarious. It was such a s***box. This is amazing. This is just amazing. Oh my God, she's gonna lose her mind. I don't even recognize it.'

In a confessional, he continued: 'It's fantastic. I've been waiting so long to see something like this happen to that dump. That's honest.'

He waved his hand at the brothers, saying, 'I can't even catch up. This place was such a dump, and now it's such a beautiful, habitable space.'

When Brad saw that the brothers had put a framed photo of Jean's late parents inside her hidden closet, he was so moved he almost couldn't speak, saying, 'That's gonna get her.'

He thought the makeup 'peninsula' was 'bada**,' saying, 'We've been doing makeup at her kitchen table for as long as I've known her. This will mean so much to her, and I couldn't have done this well. And certainly not in this amount of time.'

He stroked his stubbly beard, saying, 'S***, I'm the guy who's gonna cry on television… I can't take it all in just yet, what it will mean.'

He helped the brothers lay down carpet, place furniture, and install the coffeemaker, marveling that the new space 'opens up possibilities for [Jean's] life.'

'She knows I'm up to something,' he told them. 'She doesn't know exactly what. She knows I'm messing around back here. She will more likely think it's some kind of practical joke that's been done for her humiliation.'

When the time came, he led Jean to the garage as she asked, 'Is this some kind of interview or something?'

He'd already warned Jonathan and Drew that Jean was 'terribly shy. She just loathes any kind of attention. So that'll just be fun. But she's gonna be blown away.'

When Jean spotted the garage, she said, 'Oh my God. Is this what you've been doing?'

'Yeah, we've been busy,' Brad confessed. 'Remember this garage we've been talking about for 10 years? Fifteen maybe? Well I called in some friends.'

When Jean saw the Property Brothers, she yelled with delight and they hugged her.

Brad put his arm around her, too, telling the cameras, 'It's a constant exchange with your dear friends. She'll return the favor next week. You'll see.'

He grinned with delight as Jean saw her new space and said, 'Wow, this is friggin' diggin' amazing. This is insane… It's just so stunning! I can't get my head around [it].'

She marveled at the marble shower space, convertible bedroom, gorgeous furnishings and outside patio, sitting 'for a second to enjoy it because I'm so freaked out.'

She sobbed when she saw the photo of her mother and father, whom she'd lost at age 14.

'I feel like a real makeup artist now,' she said, looking at the closet and vanity.

'It's trick,' Brad crowed, watching her with pride.

When the brothers asked Jean what client she'd most like to work on in the new space, Brad joked, 'Well, you gotta say me.'

Jean said that Brad's generosity was 'huge' but she was 'so touched by this, I just cannot thank you enough.'

'Well, my main goal was just to get you on television,' Brad cracked, as Jean said, 'I know, but it was gonna be a crime show.'

As the episode ended, the two of them giggled together, running through lines one might find on a TV crime re-enactment show, like 'If loving you is wrong, I don't want to be right.'

'That's the one!' Brad coached her. 'You're ready.'
