Biography

Twin brothers Mark and Mike Evans were alumni of Canada’s prestigious Upper Canada College and members of the country’s national rowing team. Mark’s tenure was shorter; he first represented Canada at the 1981 World Championships, where he was sixth in the coxless pairs with his brother. After a fifth place finish at the 1983 World Championships, the duo joined Dean Crawford, Blair Horn, Grant Main, Brian McMahon, Kevin Neufeld, and Pat Turner in capturing gold in the coxed eights at the 1984 Summer Olympics, finishing just over 0.4 seconds ahead of the Americans. Students at Oxford University, they were also part of the winning Oxford crews in the 1983 and 1984 Oxford Cambridge Boat Race. Mark’s Olympic gold medal-winning performance was also his last major appearance for Canada on the international scene, but he never abandoned the sport, working as an umpire and participating in masters-level tournaments well into his 50s. He has been inducted, along with the rest of his gold medal-winning crew, into the British Columbia Sports (1985) and Canadian Olympic (2003) Halls of Fame.
