Trump gives TikTok 45 days to negotiate a sale of its US arm to Microsoft

Donald Trump has reportedly told Microsoft's CEO he 'may allow' the company to buy TikTok in the United States - but only if the app is completely separated from Beijing. Microsoft Corp said on Sunday that it would continue discussions to acquire the popular short-video app from Chinese internet giant ByteDance. The president had threatened to ban it as early as Saturday. The company made the statement following a conversation between is CEO Satya Nadella (left) and Trump. It said it would ensure that all private data of TikTok's American users is transferred to and remains in the United States (right is TikTok's US general manager, Vanessa Pappas). Over the last several months, U.S. officials have repeatedly said TikTok under its current Chinese parent company, Beijing-based software firm ByteDance, poses a national risk because of the personal data it handles. 'Microsoft fully appreciates the importance of addressing the President's concerns. It is committed to acquiring TikTok subject to a complete security review and providing proper economic benefits to the United States, including the United States Treasury,' Microsoft said in a statement. The company added that there was no certainty a deal would be reached but that it was aiming to conclude the negotiations by September 15. ByteDance was previously seeking to keep a minority stake in the U.S. business of TikTok, a proposal which the White House had rejected. Under the new proposed deal, ByteDance would exit completely and Microsoft Corp would take over TikTok in the United States, sources said Saturday.

Debate begins for who's first in line for COVID-19 vaccine

U.S. health authorities hope by late next month to have some draft guidance on how to ration initial doses, but it's a vexing decision. The CDC is drawing up guidelines that will determine who will receive first vaccines. 12 million of the most critical health workers would be first in line to receive jabs. 110 million people at high risk from the coronavirus would follow. They include those over 65 who live in long-term care facilities or in poor health. Some suggested those living where the outbreak is worst should get priority. The World Health Organization trying to ensure vaccines are fairly distributed to poor countries and not just to those who have the money to pay for it. Even if a vaccine is declared safe and effective by the end of the year, there wouldn't be enough for everyone who wanted it right away. Huge studies this summer aim to prove which of several experimental COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective including Moderna, inset center. In the next few months, equally large calls for volunteers will go out to test shots made by Johnson & Johnson, inset bottom, along with other companies. With vaccine misinformation abounding and fears that politics might intrude, CDC Director Robert Redfield said the public must see vaccine allocation as 'equitable, fair and transparent.'

GYLES BRANDRETH: I was visiting the children's branch of the New York Public Library in downtown Manhattan, and there in a quiet corner was an amazing display - five elderly stuffed toys (left).
