Population

 
1.       As at 1st July 2018, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,265,577, representing an increase of 0.1% or 690 persons over the population as at 1st July 2017.
 
2.       Islandwise, the population as at 1st July 2018 was as follows:
 
          Island of Mauritius      1,222,268
          Island of Rodrigues          43,035

          Agalega and St Brandon       274

 
     
Vital Statistics
 
3.       The number of live births registered during the first semester of 2018 was 6,501, compared to 6,810 registered during the 1st semester of 2017. Some 12,940 live births are expected for the year 2018.  The crude birth rate works out to 10.2 per 1,000 mid-year population in 2018, lower as compared to 10.7 in the preceding year.
 
4.       Some 5,308 deaths were registered during the first six months of 2018, compared to 4,818 for the corresponding period of 2017. About 10,870 deaths are expected for the year 2018, resulting in a crude death rate of 8.6 per 1,000 mid-year population, against 8.0 in 2017.
 
5.       Infant deaths registered during the period January to June 2018 was 92 against 80 for the same period in 2017. About 170 infant deaths are estimated for the year 2018, resulting in an infant mortality rate of 13.1 per 1,000 live births, against 12.2 in 2017.
 
6.       The number of still births registered during the first half of 2018 was 66, compared to 67 for the same period in 2017. Around 120 still births are expected during the year 2018, resulting in a still birth rate of 9.2 per 1,000 total births, compared to 9.9 in 2017.
 

7.       The number of marriages registered from January to June 2018 was 4,544, compared to 4,497 for the same period in 2017. Around 9,820 marriages are expected for the year 2018. The crude marriage rate works out to 15.5 per 1,000 mid-year population, against 15.4 in 2017.
