EXCLUSIVE: Hot off starring in The Stanford Prison Experiment, Billy Crudup has just been set for the male lead in 20th Century Women, the film that Beginners helmer Mike Mills wrote and will direct for Annapurna. Annette Bening, Elle Fanning and Greta Gerwig play the female leads. Annapurna and Anne Carey are producing.
The pic is set in 1979 and follows a single mother named Dorothea (Bening) as she struggles to raise her troubled teenage son. Crudup plays one of her boarders. He rents the bungalow out behind the main house. A former hippie who now seems like a bit of slacker, with no real direction in life, he’s the hunky handyman type — a skilled mechanic, carpenter, plumber and electrician — but he’s got a sweet side. That makes him appealing to Dorothea and the other ladies.
Crudup next will be seen in Spotlight, the Tom McCarthy-directed film about the Boston Globe reporters who bared the cover-up of pedophile priests. That film premieres in Toronto. He’s repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Group.
