Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning have joined the cast of Mike Mills’ family drama “20th Century Women.”
Mills wrote and will direct the new film, which Megan Ellison is producing through Annapurna, alongside Anne Carey of Archer Gray and Youree Henley. Annapurna’s Chelsea Barnard will serve as executive producer.
The film is set in Santa Barbara, Calif. during the summer of 1979. It tells the story of a mother who’s trying her best to raise her teenage son while looking for answers from two other remarkable women in her life.
Mills, who directed “Beginners,” set up the project in January with Annapurna. “The film is an ode to the women who raised me; my mom, my sisters, the girls I was in love with or looked up to at school and in the punk rock scene where I really learned about the world,” Mills said at the time.
Bening will play the mother, while Gerwig will portray a young sophisticated photographer submersed in the punk culture of the era. Fanning will play a provocative friend of the son.
Filming is set to begin later this year in Southern California.
Bening was most recently seen in “Danny Collins” and is starring in Warren Beatty’s Howard Hughes project. Gerwig recently wrapped “Maggie’s Plan,” alongside Julianne Moore and Ethan Hawke. Fanning will be next seen in “Trumbo” opposite Bryan Cranston.
