Pokemon Crystal
Everybody remembers the good ol' Pokémon of the Day Guy, right? Well, once Gold and Silver hit the shores of the US and all the hype had died down a bit, he decided to move to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro to seek enlightenment. Now that every self-respecting Pokémaniac has Ruby and Sapphire on the brain, however, it's high time we revitalize the age-old tradition of bringing you your Pokémon of the Day! And, as everyone knows, there's only one thing better than a Pokémon of the Day Guy...a Pokémon of the Day Chick!

Each and every day we'll be taking a close and personal look at one of these unique creatures called Pokémon. Here you'll find all the moves you could ever want (learned, hereditary and all compatible TMs/HMs from G/S/C and R/B/Y, if applicable), breeding chains for hereditary moves, Pokédex entries, general descriptions, max stats, in-game locations, weaknesses and resistances, gameplay tips and one or more suggested movesets (SUGGESTED, people; I'm not telling you what to do) to get the most bang for your Pokébuck.

===============================INTRODUCTION==============================

It's Christmas morning, and what better way to jump into the horrendously commercialized holiday spirit than with a look at everybody's sentimental favorite, Eevee? How many times have you (or someone you know) asked Santa to bring you/them a puppy for Christmas? Well, you can bet if Pokemon were real that Eevee's popularity would completely transcend any puppy's...just imagine! A pet that's about a thousand times cuter than a puppy, never has to go to the bathroom and can be left on a shelf in a ball indefinitely with no ill effects should you ever get tired of it! And you'd have the option of keeping it in that adorable state forever or evolving it into any one of five totally kick-arse final stages! But I ramble...all cuteness and convenience aside, let us determine just how well Eevee measures up to its evolved brethren in battle.

NAME: Eevee
TYPE: Evolution (Normal)
HEIGHT: 1' 0"
WEIGHT: 14 lbs.

EVOLUTION: evolves into Vaporeon (Water Stone), Jolteon (Thunder Stone), Flareon (Fire Stone), Espeon (sufficient Happiness Rating attained during the morning or day), or Umbreon (sufficient Happiness Rating attained during the night)

AVAILIBLE IN: Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal

LOCATION: The only Eevee in all of RBY lies nestled in a Pokeball in the upstairs of the Celadon City Mansion, just waiting for someone like you to come rescue her (it must be pretty boring spending eternity locked inside a Pokeball, wouldn't you think?). In GSC Eevee can still be found in Celadon City, though she's migrated from the Mansion to the Game Corner (for 6666 coins!)...of course, if your wallet is aching at the mere thought of all that coinage you could always just pick up an Eevee from Bill in Goldenrod City for free.

Eevee, with the possible exception of (blah) Pikachu, is easily the most popular UNevolved Pokemon to take into a "real" battle; with room for six Pokemon in a party and six total members of the Eevee family, Eevee oftentimes finds herself fighting right alongside her more mature counterparts. Unfortunately, her wild popularity can do little to amend her horrible move compatibilty...as a Normal type Eevee is woefully less versatile than the majority of her type's representatives, though I suppose that was somewhat necessary. After all, if you could teach Flamethrower to Eevee and then decided to evolve it into Espeon it'd end up fairly cheap, don't you think?

Due to her unevolved stats and limited compatibility, I'm going to take the same route with Eevee as I did with Nidoran Male and Chikorita...namely, to set her up with a bunch of party-support moves from which you can pick and choose depending on the situation. Reflect is first on the list...I think I would rather have Charm in this slot, actually, but if you breed for Charm you won't be able to go back to RBY for the Body Slam TM. If you're not a fan of Body Slam you can of course replace that move and use Charm instead of Reflect here, though you should keep in mind that Charm's effect (unlike Reflect's) wears off it your opponent switches out. With the exception of Umbreon, all of the current Eeveelutions are somewhat lacking in Defense and would, I'm sure, greatly appreciate the bolstering which Reflect would afford them.

Sand-Attack is generally a move you'd expect to see on a level 5 wild Pidgey sooner than on a fully-trained domestic Pokemon, but the move actually works well on Eevee. I wouldn't go for Double Team here because Eevee will likely die before she has a chance to make good use of it; we want something that wil stay in effect with the opponent after Eevee has left the field (and even if they do switch out to be rid of it, at least they will have provided you with a free hit). Mud-Slap may be more accurate, but it won't hit a Flying type...even though Sand-Attack is also classified as a Ground type move, it is the only one that manages to disregard that pesky little type match-up.

I don't particularly care for Toxic on Eevee as she has no way to lock the opponent in during battle, and once they're poisoned they can't be affected by a more useful condition like Paralysis or Freeze. But, again, it isn't like Eevee has too many other options when it comes to moves. I've also found that Toxic is a handy little way to get rid of an opponent's MiracleBerry (since they can't actually decide WHEN in battle they want to use it)...if you knew your opponent was holding a MiracleBerry, would you rather Toxic it away in the beginning or wait for it to cure the paralysis you had been waiting and hoping for Body Slam to inflict? And, I suppose there's always the off chance that you'll be facing the last Pokemon in a party who will be unable to switch out and "fix" Toxic, though hopefully if that happens you won't find Eevee is the last remaining member of her party as well.

By now you should know what Body Slam is for. STAB is scarcely even an issue here, given Eevee's paltry, unevolved Attack and Body Slam's relatively modest base power...but that paralysis chance is invaluable. Eevee's pretty slow, but if she manages to paralyze her opponent she can outspeed pretty much anything. And hey, even if she kicks the bucket immediately after using Body Slam her spirit can rest easy in the knowledge that she helped her team immensely by paralyzing one of the opponents.

If you're not concerned with paralysis and you want a more powerful attack here you can go with Double-Edge, though in this isolated case the recoil factor turns me off (Eevee actually has a higher HP than many unevolved Pokemon, but her Defense is so low that she really can't afford to waste any HP on recoil). It's just too bad Eevee can't learn Hyper Beam; that would receive STAB and look beyond awesome coming out of Eevee...can you tell I tend to vizualize these types of things in the Stadium 2 sense?

Since Bright Powder works pretty much like a free Double Team, it might help you get set up with Sand-Attack by giving you enough leeway to get an extra move or two in. There's really not all that much more to be done with Eevee...if you're planning to use her on an Eeveelution-exclusive team like so many others have done, you might consider outfitting her with Sunny Day and Rain Dance if you expect Flareon or Vaporeon (or Jolteon, if you have her equipped with Thunder as opposed to Thunderbolt) to be coming up behind her.

She also learns Baton Pass, obviously, though I wouldn't seriously consider putting it on her since she, for the most part, isn't hearty enough to live through setting up and passing even one stat modifer (Double Team and Attract are the only ones she can learn, anyway). The rest of the Eeveelutions are certainly powerful enough to carry Eevee should you decide to go with that most popular theme team, though on her own Eevee will be hard-pressed to prove herself as anything other than an adorable yet nearly useless novelty.

Happy holidays, everyone! Merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, coolest Kwanzaa, blessed Yule, happy I'm-not-religious-but-I-enjoy-time-off-
