Steinway & Sons (also known as Steinway) is a world famous German American manufacturer of handmade pianos. German immigrant Henry E. Steinway (originally known as Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg) founded the company in New York City in 1853. Steinway has a factory in New York City and Germany. The factory in New York City is located at Steinway Place in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens. The Steinway piano has received numerous awards including the prestigious Royal Warrant awarded by the British Queen Elizabeth II and Prince of Wales.
Visitors can take a guided tour of the Steinway factory in Queens, generally held in the mornings on either Mondays or Tuesdays. Visiting the factory requires advance reservations (walk-ins not accepted) and photography strictly prohibited. During the tour, you can observe the Steinway method of manufacturing pianos by skilled artisans, which has not changed much for more than a century. The tour takes about three hours and is very informative, beginning with a little history of Steinway.
