Church of St James, Newton Hall (Bywell)

This church was first built in 1857 and later extended in 1873. It is a revival of the Gothic style popular with the Church of England in the 19th century. The church is comparatively simple with a nave, chancel and transepts to the north and south. The church is in the shape of a cross - though a vestry spoils the lines. The church is constructed of squared stone. There are a number of stained glass windows by the famous Clayton and Bell firm. The elaborate tiles found inside the chancel are also of note and typical of the 19th century. This is a Grade II Listed Building protected by law.
