Big hit in the 90s but today is rather routine serial killer flick

Four high school friends Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Barry (Ryan Phillippe), and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr) are out partying one night when they hit and kill a man on the road. Rather than report it they attempt to cover it up. The movie is about fate as they have to pay for what they’ve done.

The story follows a familiar path for the serial killer genre. The kids start getting creepy messages and mysterious events begin happening to them. That drives them to try to figure out who is behind things.

What could they add to this tried and true formula to not make the movie routine? The main thing was the killer didn’t hunt them down one by one right away. Instead, he tormented the kids like stuffing a dead body in a trunk and then taking it out so they seem like they’re going crazy. Second, they made the killer a big bad fisherman. Yes, that’s right, a fisherman. They also dropped the Friday the 13th/Halloween type villain who walked as slow as a geriatric and yet was still able to kill people. The fisherman walked like normal people.

On the other hand, the climax is kind of lame. Julie gets stuck on a boat with the killer but doesn’t want to jump overboard and swim when it’s right by the docks.

Overall, this film was held up as one of the great horror flicks of the 90s, but today it seems rather run of the mill.

4th of July fun comes to an abrupt halt when 4 friends run over a mysterious stranger on a lonely coast road. Honestly they need one of those yellow road signs Mysterious Loner Crossing Next 10 Miles. Taking the wisest course of action they drive the body to the docks and hurl him in. Now a year later the secret has taken a toll on them but you can never run far enough from your past. It will always catch up to you and in their case the past is wearing a rain slicker and carrying a hook.

The quintessential late 90s horror film. Attractive cast, self aware dialogue, lots of popular music on the soundtrack, big cordless phones, crappy 90s cars, midriffs, the only thing that is missed is there isn’t a single pager anywhere to be seen. Jennifer Love Hewitt is great as the girl detective and everyone else is just along for the ride. The killer has a great unique look. The chase sequences are good and tense, especially the chase through the department store. I think I like this more than Scream giving it the prize for best slasher of the late 90s because the Ghost Killer can be a tad goofy where as the Rain Slicker Killer? Sure why not, is just a menacing presence. The movie gets big bonus points for featuring one of my favorite bands, Southern Culture on the Skids in a cameo as the band at the beginning of the film.

You have to see this movie multiple times to understand just how bad it is. I'm all for giving any horror movie a little wiggle room when it comes to believability, but this movie doubles and triples down on the absurd. Like when the perpetrator filled Julie's trunk with a rotting corpse and a thousand slimy crabs. Julie and the gang come back to investigate two minutes later but magically the omnipresent psycho fisherman, apparently aided throughout the movie by otherworldly telepathy, divination and teleportation means, has incredibly restored her trunk to pristine status in a matter of seconds, in a crowded neighborhood and in broad daylight no less. Freddy Krueger himself couldn't have pulled it off. Jennifer Love Hewitt is abysmal at portraying the innocent minded empath ( yet ironically this seems to be her typecast, LOL). Freddie Prinze Jr.'s acting was just as bad. On a positive note, I think the Buffy woman did a good job. All of the characters were stereotypical, but with her role they did a great job showing how life turns out for beauty queens after their happy days peak.

This is one of the best horror film in the late 90's. Definitely a favorite horror film I enjoy. By the great performances and role by Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., Ryan Phillippe, Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory TV Series), Bridgette Wilson and Anne Heche. I love watching this once a great while. First time I saw this it made jump a few more times. To me, that's a great horror film. I love the part when the hook man goes after Helen Shivers and also I like the part when hook man is trying blend in the store with mannequins with sheets on 'em. That's intense and suspense. I recommend it those horror fans of the film.

Such a fun take on the slasher formula. So many late 90s vibes from the stars themselves, to the coastal setting, the fashion, the music. This is an underappreciated slasher. Jennifer screams like the best of the scream queens and seeing Buffy not kicking ass is always strange but she's great in this role. Uhhh and Ryan Phillipe...god were we all jealous of Reese Witherspoon back then. Freddie was good but no chemistry between he and Hewitt.

The Mill Creek release of IKWYDLS is completely bare bones. There are no special features of any kind as with the original (now out of print) Sony Blu-ray. There is a single “play feature” option on the disc menu, so no scene selection or audio/subtitle options (including English subtitles). The picture looks fine enough, and it’s one of my favorites so I’m happy to have it, but if I see the Sony release around for a reasonable price I’ll definitely be getting that one to replace this.

I had never seen this when it was first out years ago, and as a long-time horror buff, I was interested in seeing it. I though It was very well-made, and suspenseful as well. Much better than something like "Friday the 13th" in my opinion. I honestly don't know why so many people rated "Suspiria," "Midsommar, " and "The Lighthouse" highly and this movie doesn't have a a high rating. I thought the movies I just mentioned were too weird. This movie in comparison was suspenseful, and a mystery in which was truly a mystery. I recommend seeing this.

This film and its sequel are DVD treasures in my dad's shed. I have loved these films since I first saw them in the late 90's. They are classic 90's teen slashers made during the 'Scream', 'Final Destination' and 'Urban Legend' era. Get this film if you love 90's stalk and slash films. Most of the actors who played the main characters in this film went on to fairly successful movie careers. The film is entertaining and very easy to follow; the acting is 'so so'. It has some gory scenes but nowhere near as tasteless and gross as Elii Roth's 'Hostel' films. Overall I consider this film to be an entertaining laugh to be watched with popcorn and the lights out. Try it on a rainy Friday or Saturday night when you don't feel like venturing out
