My favourite fanfics, and how they began. Romantic H/D, whatever became of you?

Thinking up this list, I realised that it's become very hard for me to fully enjoy long fics these days. I'm such a perfectionist that any flaw can bother me and niggle at me so that the whole work is tainted by it and I can't lose myself in it. Perfection's a lot easier to come by in short fics, and they comprise the majority of this list. Especially the very short ones - tiny ficlets, not just one-offs. Even one-offs are more vulnerable to the fatal flaw. Take the Duncan/Methos, Kronos/Methos fic Shades of Grey I read recently. It's beautiful. God, it's beautiful. Kronos tortures Methos just as Methos tortures Cassandra, there's hot sex and violence in the past and a cool in-control Methos in the present day - but it has the tiny flaw of improbable, OOC dialogue during the D/M sex scene. So it doesn't make this list. I still rec it to the skies, though.

You name a place-I’ve fallen asleep there. In Quidditch fields, leaving trains and waiting rooms. Once in a tub of stone cold water and once in the crook of your arm.

The first ficlet I ever loved. Your Morpheus, by penelope_z. H/D.

It was December, and it was freezing cold in the Potions dungeon, but Snape didn’t care.

Ah, Draco Veritas. I read it grudgingly, and only with the promise of slashy vibes. Eww, het, after all. Now I love it, slash or no slash. By thegraybook, of course.

The problem with Draco Malfoy is that he's exactly like his father.

Family Portraits by slytherlynx, sadly unavailable online anymore. It's perfect. It's a Snapefic, mainly Snape/Draco, and I *still* think it's perfect.

It started as a rumour on the Hogwarts Express.

Why have my favourite ficlet *and* my favourite chaptered fic *both* been taken off the net? Origins, we'll never forget you. Certainly not those of us who have your every ivyblossom-penned word safely saved on our computers. The only fic to ever bring me close to tears.

Your face is a little like summer, I think;
a resemblance, semblance, and somewhere dusk.

Okay, so I cheated and gave Draco's first line rather than Harry's, but hey, Ivy got her mention already in this list, and there's something so... original about Lib's poetry in this; it makes me taste her words and dream about them. luciusmalfoy and ivyblossom, In Dialogia.

"I'll have another drink."

"That'll be your ninth, and you haven't danced once," remarked the bartender. "My guess is it's a woman."

Flame and Shadow, by my very own darling sarahtales. The Ron/Pansy that won the hearts of slashers everywhere. This transcends fanfic; it taps into the fear of love and the love of muddled-up romance that every last one of us has. It was like High Fidelity, or even like Bridget Jones' Diary. Maya tells me she did it all by accident, but does that matter? Not at all.

You would expect Ron or even Hermione to be the one with the freckles, but Harry has a spray of them, too, across the back of his shoulderblade.

rhoddlet's H/H/R that never got a name. I love that opening line, and I love this fic, but I couldn't tell you why.

Duncan didn't know what to do as he watched. He had expected to find himself angered or disgusted. He tried to feel rage and hate, but all he could feel was curiosity and arousal. He stayed motionless, until the gray eyes seemed to find his.

The sole non-HP entry. The summary for Like Gods of the Sun, by olympia_m, says "A series of PWP snippets. Duncan/Methos/Kronos", and never did a summary more cruelly underrate its story. In the five chapters of Like Gods, there's beautiful BDSM, spot-on characterisation, dialogue to make you cry and serious plot twists. HOT. In every way a reader could want.

Draco knows he isn't supposed to go through his father's old school things. Knows, because they're locked in a trunk in the attic, where all the old family ghosts are, their fingers like dead leaves as they whisper to him, shhhh.

Seven Days in a Sepia Room, by kay_taylor. Ever thought that Tom/Draco would be interesting, but weren't quite sure how it would work? Ever been interested in colours, smoke and Lucius Malfoy? Read this.

Hermione was saying, “Ginny? Ginny? Ginny?”

Just over her shoulder I could see Kevin Whitby near the stairs and that insufferable Asa Norwood behind him, hand resting in the small of Kevin’s back, no cares, no worries there. Harry rushing toward the Potions room, head down, books tight against his chest. He stopped scouting around for Draco in the halls about the same time that Seamus Finnigan started muttering darkly about how there was something not quite right about the two of them, which everyone knows how absolutely full of shit Finnigan is most of the time anyway.

Speak, Desire by Audrey Thurston hirsch. Everybody talks about the fantastic things Audrey's done with Ginny in this fic, and they're completely right, but for me it's all about the language. Part stream-of-consciousness, part cool observation, so original it reminds me of very little I've ever read, with the possible exception of John Updike. Now can somebody PLEASE tell me where I can find Chapter 10, which as far as I know is only located under a friends-only tag in Audrey's journal? *bursts into tears*

In other news, my legs got repeatedly hailed by a megaphone the other morning.
