A driver suspected in last week’s road rage shooting on the 210 Freeway in Rancho Cucamonga is now in custody, the California Highway Patrol announced Friday.

Quentin Nykell Johnson, 18, was arrested in Fontana on Dec. 19, said Officer Rodrigo Jimenez, a CHP spokesman.

Johnson was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a firearm on a person, and willfully discharging a firearm with gross negligence, records show.

The victim, a Rancho Cucamonga man, was not injured in the shooting, which happened on the westbound 210 Freeway between Day Creek Boulevard and Haven Avenue shortly after 2 p.m. on Dec. 15, Jimenez said.

A lane change started the road rage, he said. He didn’t know who made the lane change.

At one point the suspect, driving a black Toyota Camry, pulled alongside the victim’s Tesla Model X and fired a round that struck the Tesla on its left side, Jimenez said.

“The victim was able to take a photograph of the suspect’s vehicle, which captured the license plate number,” he said.

Investigators were able to identify the car.

Johnson was being held at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga in lieu of $1 million bail.

The CHP asks anyone with information about the shooting to call the CHP’s Rancho Cucamonga office at 909-980-3994.
