AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas, in partnership with H-E-B,
is pleased to announce the five-player "All-Time Texas Basketball Team"
as determined by on-line fan voting. The fans' team consists of guards
T.J. Ford and Travis Mays, forwards Raymond Downs and Mike Wacker and
center LaSalle Thompson.
Over 12,500 votes were cast throughout the month of February via
UT's official web site, www.TexasSports.com, to determine the fans'
all-time team. Fans were allowed to vote for two guards, two forwards
and one center from a list of former players who were each named to
respective All-Decade teams by an in-house panel from the UT Athletics
Media Relations Office. Downs was the leading individual vote-getter
with 7,955 votes.
Ford (2002-03) earned the Naismith and Wooden Awards in 2003 as
college basketball's National Player of the Year. A consensus
first-team All-America choice in 2003, he is the only UT player to have
his number retired.
Mays (1987-90) was a two-time Southwest Conference Player of the
Year (1989-90) and a three-time first-team All-Southwest Conference
pick. He ranks second in UT history in career points (2,279) and career
three-pointers made (246) and was the first player in school history to
reach the 2,000-point plateau.
Downs (1955-57) was a two-time second-team All-America selection
(1956-57) and a two-time first-team All-Southwest Conference selection.
He still holds the UT record for career scoring average (22.3 ppg) and
single-season scoring average (26.0 ppg in 1955-56).
Wacker (1981-82, '85) was a first-team All-Southwest Conference pick
in 1985, when he led the team in scoring (16.7 ppg). He was inducted
into the Longhorn Hall of Honor in 1999.
Thompson (1980-82) was a Helms All-America choice in 1982 and a
two-time first-team All-Southwest Conference choice (1981-82). He led
the nation in rebounding in 1982 (13.5 rpg) and is one of only two
players in school history to record at least 1,000 points (1,463
points) and 1,000 rebounds (1,027 rebounds).
