Welcome to TigerWeb.

This is an experimental website in support of collaborative research and web-based creation and management of educational contentwp. Logged-in users can easily make various kinds of contributions. For an overview, see About TigerWeb.

If you don't have a Princeton University netid but would like a TigerWeb login, please send mailto:peak@princeton.edu.

For general help, use the Help facility in the navigation box. If the font is too small, try using the Ctrl + key combination one or more times, or check with your browser's documentation.

Policies

Princeton University policies apply to TigerWeb, including:

TigerWeb policies are still in flux, but currently the salient access restrictions are as follows:

  • write-access is always restricted to logged-in users;
  • write-access to your User: pages is further restricted to you and the TigerWeb administrators;
  • access to pages in the p: namespace is restricted to users who have logged in
p is short for Princeton (or private)
note that p:test and P:test are equivalent
  • read, write and protection privileges to pages in the Course: and Project: namespaces are each separately governed and are granted on a per-user basis;
  • except for anonymous users, read-access to a page generally implies write-access to the corresponding discussion page;
  • read and write access to pages within a top-level folder can be further restricted — see TigerWeb:Folder-Based Access Restrictions for details;
  • read and write access to selected pages within a top-level folder or in the Image: namespace can be further restricted — see TigerWeb:Category-Based Access Restrictions for details.

A small number of additional namespaces can be added if required.

For further details about TigerWeb policies, please visit About TigerWeb.

Bookmarklet

createbookmarktoolbar.png

For quick access to TigerWeb pages, you may wish to use a bookmarklet. The following bookmarklet and instructions are for Firefox but both can be adapted for other browsers.

  1. Check that the browser Bookmarks Toolbar is open; if in doubt, use the browser's View menu to open it.
  2. Install the bookmark by using the left mouse-button to drag this TigerWeb hyperlink to the Bookmarks Toolbar as illustrated in the above image.

The Javascript is as follows:

javascript:(function(){q=document.getSelection();if(!q)void(q=prompt('TigerWeb:',""));if(q!=null)location.href='http://isaacnewton.princeton.edu/index.php?search='+escape(q)})()

Navigation

Besides following hyperlinks and using the Go and Search buttons, one can search by namespace and prefix:

See Help:Navigation for further information.

Notes for Editors

See Help:Editing for guidance on editing.

New pages

New pages can be created in several ways, for example:

  1. create a link in an existing page, and then visit the link; a link to a page can be created by enclosing the page name within double square brackets, for example: [[TigerNet]]
  2. type the name of the new page in a search box, press the Go button, and then follow the instructions.

In both cases, spaces and underscores may be used (e.g. [[My first page]]), but each sequence of consecutive spaces and underscores will be treated as a single underscore, and leading and trailing spaces and underscores are ignored.

The name of a new page may contain special characters such as :_() but the colon has a special meaning and should only be used in connection with namespaces.

TigerWeb pages may be arranged in a hierarchy that is analogous to the Windows or Unix folder system. For example, assuming your TigerWeb login is tiger you could effectively create a subfolder under User:tiger by creating pages such as User:tiger/ART101/Degas, User:tiger/ART101/Chagall, etc.

Miscellaneous Tips

  • If you would like a spelling checker that works with the MediaWiki editor, the Google toolbar may be used.
  • A special notation for so-called interwiki links is available to simplify creating links to other web sites. For example:
    • [[google:tiger]] abbreviates a Google search and appears like this: google:tiger
    • [[wikipedia:tiger]] is short for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/tiger] and appears like this: wikipedia:tiger
    • [[wikipedia:tiger|]] is short for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/tiger|] and appears like this: tiger

Other interwiki prefixes can be viewed here.

Protected Pages

TigerWeb administrators can protect pages from being edited by anyone but TigerWeb administrators. See TigerWeb:ProtectedPage to see what such a protected page looks like.

In the Image: namespace, the category-based access restriction system can be used to limit access as follows:

  • so long as the description page includes [[Category:Protected]], uploads will be prevented;
  • so long as the description page includes [[Category:Restricted]], direct access will be limited to logged-in users.

For additional information about restricting access, see:

Permalinks

A permalink is a hyperlink that points to a page whose content is in some sense permanent. Permalinks are mainly useful when one wishes to cite a particular version of a page. Like permafrost, however, a permalink may be less permanent than one might think. In particular, there is often a large gap between the source used to generate a page and the rendered version of that page.

On TigerWeb, a permalink is simply a reference to a specific version of the source of a page. The line in the navigation labeled Permalink gives the "permalink" for the current page.

TigerWeb also has templates for flagging a link as being a permalink. For example, this Permalink11px.gifreferenceDOI uses Template:DOI to display the DOI permalink. The rightward arrow in the red box is the flag; the superscript DOI indicates the link is an external DOI link. See also Template:permalink.

The entire URL of a TigerWeb permalink itself should not be regarded as a permanent reference, firstly because the server name will almost certainly change, and secondly because TigerWeb reserves the right to delete content.

Apart from the servername component of the URL, however, the URL is invariant. To determine the invariant part of the URL of a particular version of a TigerWeb page, move the cursor to the button marked Permalink in the navigation box. A URL such as the following will be visible:

 http://isaacnewton.princeton.edu/index.php?title=Main_Page&oldid=1442

The invariant part (everything after the last '/') is shown in red.

Extensions at TigerWeb

TigerWeb supports numerous types of extensions. One family of extensions involves the concept of folders, which allow distinctive web spaces to be created under the TigerWeb umbrella. For example, each folder can have its own logo, navigation menu, and set of rules governing access. See TigerWeb:Folder-Based Access Restrictions.

TigerWeb also supports:

  • sortable tables — see Help:Tables
  • the <javascript> tag for executing Javascript
  • the <php> tag for executing PHP (currently restricted to protected pages) — see phpinfo for an example

Plug-ins:

See also Help:Tags for plug-ins that provide special-purpose tags.

File extensions:

  • Many file types can be uploaded to TigerWeb, and files of certain types are handled specially. For example:
    • Flash .swf files can be displayed inline, whether or not they have been uploaded.
    • .svg files can be uploaded and displayed inline.
    • Uploaded and external .mp3 and .ogg audio files can be played — a test file and information about Template:Audio can be found at Help:Audio.
  • See Help:Upload for further details.

TeX:

Support for Dublin Core and CIDOC/CRM:

RSS and Atom feeds:

  • RSS and Atom xml.gif feeds, including both generic feeds and specialized feeds, e.g. watchlist feeds and feeds by category. See Help:RSS for further details.

See also TigerWeb:Gallery and TigerWeb:Templates.

Limitations

Current limitations include:

  • There is no support for any kind of interactive educational assessment within TigerWeb.
  • There is no communication between Blackboard and TigerWeb.
  • The contents of uploaded files are not searched when one uses the Search button, but they can in general be searched using Google. To restrict a Google search to this website, one may use the Google button in the search box.

LDAP support was installed on August 10, 2006.
