Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Miami

Archbishop John C. Favalora, D.D., is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. He
was ordained to the priesthood on December 20, 1961 in Rome, Italy by Most
Reverend Martin J. O’Connor, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy and
History, a Licentiate Degree in Theology, a Master’s Degree in Education and
Administration, and two honorary Doctorate Degrees.

Archbishop Favalora served 25
years as a priest of the Archdiocese of New Orleans before being named bishop of
the Diocese of Alexandria, LA, in 1986. In 1989, he became bishop of the Diocese
of St. Petersburg, FL, where he served until being named archbishop of the
Archdiocese of Miami on November 3, 1994, replacing retired Archbishop Edward A.
McCarthy. He was installed as the new archbishop on December 20, 1994, by Most
Reverend Agostino Cacciavillan, Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to the U.S. at St. Mary’s
Cathedral in Miami.
Archbishop Favalora has
been a member of many organizations including: Central Louisiana Ministerial
Association; Louisiana Catholic Conference Board of Directors; Louisiana
Catholic Conference Continuing Education of Clergy; Louisiana Interchurch
Conference Board of Directors; National State University of Alexandria Lay
Advisory Committee; National Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (NCCB) Committee on
Vocations; NCCB Black Liturgy Subcommittee; North American College in Rome Board
of Trustees.
Currently Archbishop Favalora serves
on the following committees and organizations including: NCCB Committee on
Priestly Life and Ministry; NCCB Ad-Hoc Committee on Sexual Abuse; NCCB ProLife
committee; Florida Catholic Conference Board of Directors; Saint Leo College
Board of Trustees; the Florida Catholic newspaper Board of Trustees;
State Chaplain and member of the Knights of Columbus; St. Vincent de Paul
Regional Seminary Board of Trustees; Knights of the Holy Sepulchre; and Knights
of St. Peter Claver.
