Cymbeline is a mortar locating radar
which has been used by by General Support Regiments in both Germany
and the UK since the mid 1970s. Cymbeline is mounted on an AFV 432.
Cymbeline detects the flight path of a mortar bomb at two points in
the trajectory as it passes through the radar beam(s), rapid computing
then enables the grid reference of the enemy base plate to be
identified and engaged with artillery.
An 81 mortar bomb can be detected at a range of about 10 kms while a
120 mm bomb is detectable at about 14 kms.
In 1994 Cymbeline was deployed by the British Army in support of
United Nations operations in the Sarajevo area of the Former
Yugoslavia to identify gun and mortar positions around the city. The
equipment appears to have been extremely successful in this role and
provided much valuable intelligence for the UN Command Staff. The
equipment was used extensively during the late 1995 UN bombardment of
Serb artillery positions.
At the beginning of 1999 we believe that there were over 325 Cymbeline
in service with 18 nations, including Singapore, Norway, Denmark,
Finland, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, Nigeria, South Africa,
Malawi, Switzerland and New Zealand.
