Variety Map Pack sponsored by NVIDIA hits PC June 5th

May 30, 2008 · 156 Comments

Great news! Heads up that the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Variety Map Pack sponsored by NVIDIA will be available worldwide for our PC players next week on June 5th!

NVIDIA is making it possible for PC players to download the map pack for Free on the PC thanks to their sponsorship. In addition, expect to see quite a few promotions popping up leading up to the launch of the map packs on the 5th and beyond. I know NVIDIA has a lot of great things planned for PC users in addition to maps becoming available.

There’s going to be some PC specific previews going up online this weekend I believe that will cover how well the maps play on the PC version as well as some contests and promotions happening all next week. I’ll be posting up details on them as they get started all this week!

The Variety Map Pack includes four new maps for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer including Broadcast, Chinatown, Killhouse, and Creek.

In addition to the map pack hitting, PC Players will be receiving the 1.6 Patch for the PC version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare that will add support for the new maps, fix a server crash exploit recently reported by the community, and a few additional features / bug fixes. I will post a full patch notes list next week.

    Good news!

While yes, console gamers did have to pay for the maps, however as you can see this is sponsored by Nvidia. Meaning Nvidia basically paid for the games to come to the PC version for free. Along with the 1.6 patch.

  • ChaZ // May 30, 2008 at 11:33 pm

    thank god!
I’m glad to see this little… but very great recognition to the pc community… nowadays where every company seems to hate the pc users.
Gotta love IW and NVIDIA for making this possible !!! <3 !!!

Great news, for those Xbox/PS3 players who had to pay… nVIDIA is paying for PC users, and I’m pretty sure they paid alot more (to cover for all sales of the PC version, and sales of future copies)

  • nhiverson // May 31, 2008 at 12:03 am

Sweet great news cant wait to hear what is all included in the patch : )

  • phil // May 31, 2008 at 12:04 am

yeah, this is a big “thank you” from Nvidia for buying their products, we all appreciate that

  • Nunu // May 31, 2008 at 12:05 am

    >yet xbox and ps3 users had to pay for the map pack……cuz that’s fair!!

Remember though, that Xbox360 got their maps 1.5 months ago, and PS3 over a month ago. They paid for exclusivity, and we’ve seen with other games that over time, DLC content becomes free for Consoles too. The COD4 maps will probably become free as well for Consoles, over time.

  • |Wildcat| // May 31, 2008 at 12:08 am

Okay… What do these guys not understand about a “sponsor”?? /scratches head…

To clarify, nVIDIA PAID Activision/IW a certain sum of money in order for PC users to receive the map pack.

We’re not getting anything free nOObs. I’ve got about $700 in nVIDIA products in my PC right now (not counting previous purchases).

  • |EAS|Kevin // May 31, 2008 at 12:10 am

Sweetness! We’ve all been waiting for this to come! And all at the expense of nVIDIA :) THANK YOU VERY MUCH NVIDIA!!

PC users do get treated better than the console, even though it does come out later.

  • [pcgam3r] // May 31, 2008 at 12:12 am

yup, NVDA rolls out the red carpet for us…

    thx a million NVIDIA

thx IW for completing the patch and this offer

  • desynch // May 31, 2008 at 12:26 am

meh. that is kinda poopy that us xbox players had to pay for maps, although we did get the exclusive when they released. BUT, pc players also get the satisfaction of user created maps.. which in my opinion does kinda suck because IW isn’t working on anything for us xbox players anymore. =/

  • L3VIATH4N // May 31, 2008 at 12:29 am

To any future (and past) console players upset that PC gets the maps for free, we’re not. nVidia is paying for us. Same as when mommy buys you the icecream cone from the vendor, it’s not free.

  • Whiskey // May 31, 2008 at 12:35 am

    ” desynch // May 31, 2008 at 12:26 am
BUT, pc players also get the satisfaction of user created maps.. which in my opinion does kinda suck because IW isn’t working on anything for us xbox players anymore.”

You forget though that when IW announced the mapping contest, they said to design maps regardless of platform (PC, Xb360, PS3). This hints that the winning maps from the contest will eventually be converted for all platforms and will be available for Xb360, PS3, and PC. And these will be the “best of the best” custom maps (some custom maps are great, but many are average or below average).

PC users are actually building content FOR consoles right now with these maps! :D

Oh, and btw…402 has already said that anything created by the community will be FREE, so if/when these maps come, nobody will have to pay for them. ;)

  • Justin // May 31, 2008 at 1:34 am

I love how the industry makes console users pay for content that PC users get for free. This generation of consoles will go down as the one that that industry sold out on.

  • Justin // May 31, 2008 at 1:38 am

    @ChaZ

It’s all about money these days. The PC demographic doesn’t rake in near the amount of money that consoles and their DLC do.

  • Zoa // May 31, 2008 at 1:54 am

Well technically you ARE getting it for free Lev.

Your mom buys the ice cream, and because she’s nice she gives it to you. YOU didn’t pay anything for a material or service, so you got it for free.

  • |EAS|Kevin // May 31, 2008 at 1:57 am

    Justin

That’s true that the software companies don’t make as much money as from consoles, but the money gets put other places keeping other companies in business. Many of the people who play the new games upgrade their computers many times over the years, keeping people like NVIDIA, the provider of our maps!

So, we spend just as much money or even more money than the console players, but just in different places :)

    Thanks 402 and Nvidia :p

Lmao @ people complaining console players had 2 pay

    What do you expect?

You pay monthy to use Xbox live
You pay for every little DLC
You can’t make your own content (maps/mods)
Your on a 3 year old obsolete system

You need microsoft 2 approve content /patches

IDK why any1 would want 2 game a console

1 Pro about PC is free maps

  • Paul // May 31, 2008 at 2:54 am

    @ Justin

Consoles are killing the PC market

Companies are developing games for console gameplay, then porting them 2 PC

We got games that have console sized maps, bad FOV they dont even let you change, some games dont even suport LAN, or even make mod/map tools!

    Yet it makes no sense

Can you imagine if companies devleoped for PC?

What kind of graphics they could produce, if they programed the game for PC, instead of a crappy specd 360?

Also developing for PC keeps your game alive with custom content

I’d like to reiterate that nVIDIA and Activision/IW did a fantastic job on the map pack and patch 1.6. All PC gamers should be thankful that a company in the PC industry still supports us - and none other than an excellent producer of hardware like nVIDIA!!

    @Paul
    Very true.

Crysis is a fine example of what’s to come if developers focus on PC games. The graphics and physics in that game are phenomenal.

My only complaint with the PC though is the costs. Sure you have the “budget” gaming PCs that can play current games at medium or so settings but that build won’t last six months before you will have to upgrade because the games become more demanding. It’s either spend a massive amount of money when you first build it so it lasts longer or continually pay nickel and dime for upgrades when you need them.

    hey 402,
I think the “Theatre” idea from Halo 3 is actually a very cool idea and it would be great to replay some of your best matches in the third or first person in COD. Maybe you should think of incorporating this feature into a future DLC or the next COD.

Halo’s gameplay doesn’t hold a candle to COD4’s, but this little theater feature is pretty cool.

  • sc1ssorhands // May 31, 2008 at 5:34 am

…pretty damn cool. Then, when telling a friend about that 15 kill streak in Wet Work, when you get behind the team, slashing the upper deck snipers, then running rampant behind their team pistol-izing them…they’ll believe you. :)
Also, it’d just be damn sweet to save and watch your best matches over again when you want to.

  • NO FUN // May 31, 2008 at 5:57 am

  • LC // May 31, 2008 at 6:14 am

Haha, why are the console gamers complaining? They didn’t have to pay for it, they chose too, and on top of that they got it earlier. Frankly, the only one who should be complaining about this, is…..No one. Nvidia got some advertisement and a better reputation. IW got money for this. Console gamers got it earlier. And PC gamers get it for free.

  • [pcgam3r] // May 31, 2008 at 6:35 am

  • SN1PER UK // May 31, 2008 at 6:44 am

Regardless of being sponsored it is still not fair to the users who had to buy this pack.

I don’t care that IW were sponsored by Nvidia. The bottom line is that PC users still got the maps for free. Maybe IW should have tried to get sponsors for the console versions and saved us some money too.

Not complaining too much as the maps are great and well worth the cash but it still takes the pi** that we had to pay for them.

  • [pcgam3r] // May 31, 2008 at 7:08 am

we are also getting them almost a month after you guys did, you paid for exclusivity…

also, Microsoft encourages DLC with their horrendous hosting fees, that way they get a slice of the pie too… internet hosting costs MUCH less

the fact that we are getting them for free is quite fair actually, now please stop whining

  • CODTV // May 31, 2008 at 7:30 am

    Give us CODTv 402

  • Nunu // May 31, 2008 at 7:40 am

Console players have no right to complain.

By the time the maps come out for PC, you will have had them for 6 (PS3) to 8 (Xbox360) weeks earlier. You paid for the privilege of getting them early, which PC’ers have been dying for up to now.

And it’s likely that eventually they’ll be free for Consoles too, once the buzz dies down. Again, you’re paying for time, essentially.

And like others have said, you’ll probably be getting more maps in the future, for FREE, created by PC users.

  • sc1ssorhands // May 31, 2008 at 7:42 am

lol @ all you PC guys saying how the console guys shouldn’t be moaning….after all the moaning you did in the console map threads I think they have a right to moan in here! :p

  • ps3magician // May 31, 2008 at 1:18 pm

It´s hard that the 360 and PS3 users had to pay although they had to buy the much more expensive versions. It shows that pirating games on PC isn´t that useless when you get a map pack for free for which the honest console players had to pay.

  • Mikey // May 31, 2008 at 1:27 pm

    >>lol @ all you PC guys saying how the console guys shouldn’t be moaning….after all the moaning you did in the console map threads I think they have a right to moan in here! :p>>

Oh please. PC’ers asked questions about why we weren’t included, and console twits started piling on taunting us. A lot.

So consider this payback. Karma’s a bitch.

And in most countries, the console versions cost $10 more than PC. It’s not “much more expensive”. Most of that $10 goes to the overhead of running your servers on XBL and PSN. PC servers are bought and paid for out of the pockets of clans and server owners and cost quite a bit each month.

So stop your whining console kiddies. We all pay our $$$ in different ways.

  • David // May 31, 2008 at 1:32 pm

sweet, now pc users can shut up so IW can finally fix the lag issues that plague this game. Seriously, now americans I know on live are leaving because of the terrible lag!

Fix the lag issues on the 360 ASAP!

  • shades // May 31, 2008 at 1:33 pm

Blame Sony & microsoft for letting you pay -10€, not PC gamers. Thx to nvidia we don’t have to pay.

Besides that, where is the time that new maps just were common in patches instead of charging for them. Ow ye thx for a free winter crash :/

  • Spike // May 31, 2008 at 1:39 pm

Mikey, your logic is flawed. You say that in the end both console and PC users pay for servers. So, what’s your point? Both are paying for servers, yet console people had to pay to get the map pack. On top of it, you have no reason to whine about PC having it worse than console since you can have dedicated servers. Console people aren’t so lucky - they get the raw end of the stick with the cheap and crappy P2P servers. THAT SAID, I am glad that PC gets the map pack for free - it’s some justification for them being ignored by IW for so long.

I am also glad that I boycotted the map pack on PS3 (actually, I haven’t touched the game in a while since the lag on it sucks so bad), since that has saved me $10 and a bunch of anger that most console people are JUSTLY feeling right now. From what all my friends tell me and from what I’ve seen of them, the map packs were a rip off, even for 10 bucks. Most of the maps were reboots from COD2, just like how 90% of COD4 is just a reboot of COD2 - hardly any original content there.

So, in the end, I’m glad I boycotted those crappy map packs and I’ll still keep boycotting them.

  • Spike // May 31, 2008 at 1:49 pm

    New Comic:

FourzeroTwo: Uh oh, the console peeps didn’t like the t-shirts after they heard NVIDIA footed the bill for the map packs…

IW Exec: Screw them! We already got their money!

FourZeroTwo: You’re not making my job easier, you know…

Developer: Well, my job’s been fairly easy lately. I mean, now that the map pack is distracting the PC users, we can push the patch for PC back even further now! I think I’ll take another week off and go to Hawaii… Ahhh… Hawaii…

    FourZeroTwo: Uhhh… YEAH… that doesn’t help me out…

IW Exec: Well, think of something, dumbass.

    FourZeroTwo: Wait! I got it!

    IW Exec: What is it?

FourZeroTWO: LET’S GIVE THEM HATS! *big stupid grin*

    IW Exec and Developer: BRILLIANT!

    It’s funny because it’s true!

  • Billy Bob Thornton // May 31, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Lol at everyone thanking Nvidia as if they’ve sponsered the pack out of the sheer goodness of their heart. It’s all about the money folks, your money… and Nvidia want it. LOL.

Great news none the less :)

What money we arnt paying jack

  • Mitch // May 31, 2008 at 2:17 pm

@Billy BOB: If it was for money then we would have had to pay like console players but IW found a way around for us PC players and NVIDIA came to the rescue, this proves IW’s heart still lies with PC :D

  • Billy Bob Thornton // May 31, 2008 at 2:36 pm

I know we aren’t paying jack, I’m just saying that it’s in Nvidia’s best interest to sponsor the biggest online fps of the moment.

I think we can all agree that Nvidia wounldn’t be sponsoring the pack if cod 4 weren’t so popular, hence they aren’t really doing you a favour out the good of their heart, they’re doing it becouse they’re thinking of future sales, which is fine by me, that’s bussiness. I just found it amusing that so many people are thanking Nvidia as if they’ve your best interests at heart.

The true thanks imo should be directed at IW who would of released the pack earlier had their hands not be tied!

FYI I own a GTS G92, so in no way am I anti Nvida.

/Looks forward to seeing the new “the way its meant to be played” logo at start up. :)

i put in over $1000 into my pc a few years ago when i built it, will do the same for the next one i build. You guys get constant support and pc users have to suffer through tons of game glitches because the game was made for console. Really, i wouldn’t complain, you have it easy.

  • TOPDL // May 31, 2008 at 3:51 pm

  • veleron // May 31, 2008 at 3:54 pm

I’m sure Nvidia isn’t really sponsoring anything, it’s just that IW had to release the pack - but didn’t know how: pc gamers won’t pay, yet it was impossible not to release it or release it for free, hence this trick.

    @NO FUN
    Too bad.
    @ps3magician
Try playing online with a pirated version. Even if you can find a working key its most likely banned by punkbuster. I bought a legit version so stop complaining
    @Spike
Ok so for a 28 slot server im paying 43$ a month, for my other 2 18 slot servers im paying 27$ a month. Now how does that compare to a Xbox 360 user.

right now an xbox 360 is 349.99 + 49.99 for live
+ 60$ for the game + 300.00$ for a tv the same size (19 inches) as most computer players
    thats a total of 759.98

Now my PC cost I would say 850$. I got the monitor free. I replaced the power supply and added a graphics card (nvidia 8600 gt) 200$. game 50$ so that makes me up to 1100$ WITHOUT my clan. Now lets see since I have 1- 28 slot 2 - 18 slot servers, and lets say I prepaid for a year. (1$ a month cheaper for all the servers)
    1 - 18 slot = 324$ so 2 = 648$
    1 - 28 slot = 508$
plus a voice server teamspeak(1 full year)
    51$
    web hosting (website)
    95.40 (I pay per year)
Protected tags to keep noobs from taking my clan tags, provided by punkbuster
24$ per year (which I have to spend time explaining to every clan member how to set them up)

so to tally up my clan costs per year.
    1326.40$

an xbox 360 or ps3 clan:
    webhosting: 95.40$
    per year: 95.40$

NOT TO MENTION that I have to worry about hackers a lot more then any xbox 360 players would. which takes time.

    so console players keep complaining!

Ice Man: You forgot something: You’re CHOOSING to pay for all of that AND foot the bill for ALL OF IT. The main emphasis is your CHOOSING IT. So, don’t throw all those pricetags at me - a lot of them are unnecessary “perks” you want and freely choose to pay for.

$1100 for a gaming PC? If you built that yourself, that’s pretty expensive - I know guys who build their own gaming PC’s that can run COD4 on a good framerate for a few hundred less than what you’re listing.

If you want to compare prime gaming PC’s to the prime gaming console, let’s talk the 60GB PS3: When it came out it was $800. Now, good luck finding a legitimate brand new one for less than that, and most are listed for around $1000. Refurbished 60GB from Gamestop costs $500 and some change, but let me remind you that it’s probably sold to you broken anyway, so you’ll have to get a warranty for that bringing the price up to around $650. Without tax. That’s still a good chunk of change there.

Now let’s put this in: Server cost: $43. Are you footing the bill for that yourself or is this split among your whole clan? $43 per month for a good, dedicated server split among the a clan, even a small one, is a good deal - much better than the rip-off people are getting on the 360 right now.

Teamspeak server cost? So you’re footing that bill all by yourself too? Make your clan split the cost with you, and it ends up coming out cheap. Or better yet, there’s some free alternatives out there. Maybe they’re not as tip-top as Teamspeak, but hey, they work.

    Website? Unnecessary.

Protected tags? Unecessary perk. Sure it’s nice, but it’s a luxury.

Worrying about hackers? Man, I’d rather have a PLAYABLE GAME and only have to worry about kicking out hackers from my games every now and then than have to deal with the BS I run into on PSN. By the way, people are finding ways to hack the PS3 version. It hasn’t run rampant or anything like what you’re experiencing on PC, but it is possible to hack the PS3 version.

But seriously Iceman, be glad IW has been ignoring you guys. They just f***ed things up REALLY bad for the PS3 players and for the 360 players with the last couple “patches”. The game has become unplayable with the “improvements” made for console guys. Like I said, I’m glad to see PC players had something good come their way, but the console players do have a right to be angry about having to have paid for a crappy rip-off map pack.

  • Secura // May 31, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Well thx for the work guys :) I already enjoy the 5th of june! Will we finaly be able to write our name in colors like the past cod games (lol I know that’s a detail but I’m just curious to see that we can actualy write in color but not have name in colors :P )

    Anyway thx cya

  • Spike // May 31, 2008 at 6:11 pm

    An addendum to this:

You might say that we console players CHOSE the crappy servers much like you CHOSE the good servers on PC. Well, here’s something you should consider: When COD4 came out for PS3, the game was VERY playable and LOTS of fun. There was very little noticeable lag, and it was just plain awesome. Well, after the rank patch fix. Then, January 2008 IW decided to f**k things up for the PS3 and 360 players with a patch that made the game go global. Before you know it, every game is laggy as hell. Did we PS3 players choose that or want that? HELL NO!

obviously im not forking the whole cost but again. It still costs us PC users more.

google search ps3 lag and go to the 4th one down from a forum post.

That was pre-patch… which you state you do not have the patch… Maybe your just far from a server?

as far as I know for the xbox 360 (my room-mate had it in college, and I played on it. This was after the patch) there was no lag issues.

Look on ebay for a new ps3 with 60GB… you can get them for less then 700$

sever cost is by slots. 1.50$ a slot + 1$ a month(because its month to month)

website unnecessary? are you kidding me? To do what you want for a website (not just a forum) then you need a host.

about kicking hackers… For reasons such as having 2 - 3 people on our server at once and then kicking everyone who comes in we do not have map vote on. So for all those servers out there that do not stream punkbuster, do not have admins around and do not have map vote on then your stuck finding another server.

Basically you got the new maps and we had to wait around. Thank you nvidia

Ice Man: You forgot something: You’re CHOOSING to pay for all of that AND foot the bill for ALL OF IT. The main emphasis is your CHOOSING IT.”"

And Console folks *chose* to buy a Console gaming system that required pay-for-content downloads. PC players *chose* a much more expensive platform, but because it doesn’t have some of the overhead Consoles do, PC games are usually $10 cheaper, and we usually do not pay for content.

Also, right now IW/Activision probably doesn’t have a reliable delivery system for paid-content. And PC players have never had to deal with it for past COD’s. So what should IW do…introduce some weird form of paid-content right now in the middle of this game’s lifespan, and split the community? Or should they just not give PC the maps at all, even though they’re already built and sitting there on the shelf?

People have to take a step back and realize this is a business, and things aren’t always “fair”. But you have to try to do what you can to make your customer happy. The trade-off in this case is that Consoles paid for maps, but got them 2 months early. Like the other dude said, DLC stuff often becomes free for Consoles later on down the road…so when that happens, will the people who paid for the maps 2 months ago be mad at the ones who get it for free later? Actually, looks like this is already happening, with people getting mad that the maps are included with the GOTY editions for no extra charge. But again, it’s business - the GOTY edition is to try to get more people to buy the game. People who might not buy it without the extra incentive, and who probably wouldn’t pay extra for it.

Time = money. In many cases it really is that simple. It’s the same in other industries, like electronics, fashion, etc. If you get it when it’s brand new, you pay more. If you wait, you get it cheaper.

  • NobodyHome // May 31, 2008 at 10:02 pm
