ALSO SCARFING up prosciutto and penne pasta at this party were the mayor's delectable ladyfriend Diana Taylor, writers Brooke Hayward, Susan Fales-Hill and Hamish Bowles, the ubiquitous Jonathan and Somers Farkas, fashion's Stacey Bendet, the rock star Moby, my favorite music entrepreneur Damon Dash with his designer wife, Rachel Roy, of Bergdorf and Saks, plus movie producer Luke Parker-Bowles.

The latter is fresh from New England where they filmed "Evening" with the all-star talented gang of Vanessa Redgrave, Meryl Streep, Eileen Atkins, Natasha Richardson, Toni Collette, Claire Danes.

Producer Luke is still dazzled by his elite cast and his next project, with partner Jeff Sharp, will be a film from the first novel of our hostess, titled "God of Driving."

SO HAPPY to have someone else say it other than me. Here's the veteran film critic Andrew Sarris: "Please don't let 'Babel' win Best Picture - a towering mess." Of course, many other critics and moviegoers disagree. But I just found this effort to be a case of the emperor's new clothes.

CLASS WILL OUT when it comes to Tony Bennett! The legendary singer didn't just mix and match with no connection on his terrific "Duets" album (the way Sinatra did). Tony actually went into the studios with the likes of Sting, Elton John, Bono, the Dixie Chicks, Michael Bublé, Barbra Streisand, etc.

And even when Streisand didn't want to go to a studio and they sang together in her home, Tony and Babs solved the problem of acoustics. They found the one perfect bathroom, locked themselves in and made their hit, singing "Smile."

SINGER HARRY Connick Jr. escorted Vogue's Anna Wintour to the Marc Jacobs show last week. Then on "David Letterman," he said how much he enjoyed being out with her: "She's shy and is nothing like that character in 'The Devil Wears Prada.' "

Harry is on the bandwagon. Paramount went the limit in assuring everyone that the star Meryl Streep was assuredly not playing Anna! Although Anna probably rolled her eyes at this and shrugged, she did attend the premiere, proving she's another class act.
