 Biography, Highlights and Media:

  • Height: 5'5"
  • Weight: 110
  • Born: Nov. 7, 1966 in St. Martin Parish, La.
  • Residence: Louisville, Ky.
  • Family: Fiancee Lisa Funk.
  • Through Oct. 5, 2008 Borel had 121 wins from 706 mounts and $3,659,666 in earnings.
  • Rode Street Sense to a 10-length victory in the 2006 Breeders' Cup Juvenile for his first win on racing's Championship day. Street Sense was his only mount.
  • Street Sense and Borel went on to capture the 2007 Kentucky Derby, making the Street Cry colt the first horse to win both races in the 23-year history of the Breeders' Cup. Narrowly lost the chance at a Triple Crown bid when nosed out by Curlin in the Preakness.
  • Just days after the Derby, was invited to the White House for a white-tie dinner honoring Queen Elizabeth, who had attended her first Derby.
  • Top mounts in 2008 have included Delightful Kiss (G3 Turfway Park Fall Championship, G3 All American Handicap); Screen Your Friend (G3 Bashford Manor Stakes) and Jonosboro (G3 Razorback Handicap).
  • Began riding match races in his home state at age eight before launching his professional career at 16 ... "All I ever wanted to be was a jockey. A lot of kids make plans to be firemen, cowboys or astronauts, but I knew by eight that I wanted to ride races."
  • Known for his work ethic and often gallops and does stable chores for his brother, trainer Cecil Borel, before working horses in the morning even while ranking a leading rider. Still helps out his brother when they are both at Oaklawn Park during the winter.
  • Rides mostly the Kentucky-Arkansas-Louisiana circuit. Has won titles in all three states, most notably at Oaklawn Park where he won the championship in 1995, dethroning Pat Day, who had won every meet since 1982.
  • Oaklawn Park was the site of his 3,000th and 4,000th winners. Became 45th rider in North America to reach the latter milestone on Feb. 16, 2005.
  • Major races won include upset win with Rockamundo (108-1) in the 1993 Arkansas Derby and the 2006 Stephen Foster with Seek Gold at odds of 92-1. He also won the 1997 and 2001 editions of the Apple Blossom Handicap with Halo America and Gourmet Girl, respectively.
  • Won the Cajun Jockey Challenge at Evangeline Downs on July 13, 2007. The event brings together top riders who got their start in Louisiana.
  • Was honored with the 2007 ESPY Award for top jockey as well as the 2007 National Turf Writers Association "Mr. Fritz" Award for typifying the spirit of racing.
  • Often dubbed “Bo-Rail” for his penchant for hugging the rail en route to victory.
  • Nov. 14, 2007, Borel captured his 800th winner at Churchill Downs, becoming the fifth jockey to reach that milestone. Gives credit to agent Jerry Hissam for success.
  • Almost missed his chance for a return engagement to the Derby until last-minute defections allowed his mount, Denis of Cork, the chance to compete in the big dance. Though breaking from the auxiliary gate and running last for over half the race, Borel made up ground by moving to rail and rallying for third place at odds of nearly 30-1.
