How we can help at events

Two young first aid volunteers at an event©Info

Every year, 7,500 British Red Cross volunteers and staff provide support at more than 10,000 public events across the UK. Our skilled members, trained in advanced first aid and life-saving techniques, successfully treat more than 20,000 people a year – many with serious injuries.

Big and small

We have long experience of providing support at all kinds of occasions, from major sporting and cultural events – including the Great North Run, WOMAD festival and Pride London – to smaller-scale occasions such as local fetes.

Whatever the event, we can set up treatment areas, deal with injuries and provide ambulance crews to safely escort casualties to the nearest hospital. So whether you’re expecting 300 people or 30,000, you’ll find us ready to provide emergency support.

Trust the experts

Besides providing cover at thousands of events, the Red Cross regularly supports the statutory authorities during emergency incidents. We also enjoy an excellent working relationship with the National Health Service, for whom we act as an auxiliary in times of particular need. And, since we co-write the standard UK first aid manual, you can take our word that we know what we’re doing.

What we can offer

  • 7,500 fully trained first aiders

Life-savers in action

Volunteer Michael Watson was on duty with colleagues during a Port Vale football match when they got a radio call that a man was seriously ill. Racing through the stadium, the team quickly reached the scene to find an unconscious casualty in his 60s who had stopped breathing.

For the next six minutes the team worked tirelessly, using CPR and a portable defibrillator before finally reviving the man. Michael recalled: “He wasn’t breathing or showing any signs of life. No ifs or buts, he would have died without our help.”
