The Hardest Freakin' Boss Battles

Some bosses are fluffy, bundles of love that stroll through the park and buy you chocolate. Then, there's these guys.

The Hardest Boss Battles - Death
The Hardest Boss Battles - Death

Death - Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

I’m so glad that no one has managed to kill Death yet, because that would mean that my old Uncle Lenny ain’t never going to kick the bucket and I could really use that life insurance money to get these Armenian dudes off my back.

The Hardest Boss Battles - Zeromus
The Hardest Boss Battles - Zeromus

Zeromus - Final Fantasy IV

I hate it when end-game bosses transform into complete nonsense. Zeromus’s final form looks like a Christmas ornament designed by H.R. Giger. And not even early Giger. Late, super crappy Giger.

The Hardest Boss Battles - Darth Malak
The Hardest Boss Battles - Darth Malak

Darth Malak - Star Wars: KotOR

Killing Malak is a big bummer because it’s pretty much your fault that he’s the dark lord of the Sith to begin with. It’s kind of like how I completely berated my stepbrother at his intervention, even though I was the one that gave him his first wine cooler.

The Hardest Boss Battles - King DeDeDe
The Hardest Boss Battles - King DeDeDe

King Dedede - Kirby’s Dreamland

King Dedede makes you fight him in his own personal boxing arena. I would kill to have one of those in my apartment. I would use it to train myself to knock out a mountain lion with an uppercut because that’s always been a life goal of mine.

The Hardest Boss Battles - Shiro Tagachi
The Hardest Boss Battles - Shiro Tagachi

Shiro Tagachi - Guild Wars

Shiro killed the emperor because a fortuneteller told him to. See, that’s why I don’t trust fortune tellers. For me, it’s either the horoscope in the Boston Globe or sitting in bed all day with a shotgun aimed at the door.

The Hardest Boss Battles - Hiruko
The Hardest Boss Battles - Hiruko

Hiruko – Shinobi

Hiruko is an evil sorcerer, which sounds redundant. He’s also wearing a Chinese finger trap as a hat, which I’m sure is a real bitch to take off every night.

The Hardest Boss Battles - King Leo
The Hardest Boss Battles - King Leo

Fire Leo - Viewtiful Joe

If you want to have a chance at beating Fire Leo, you’re going to have to set Viewtiful Joe on fire. It’s kind of like the old saying goes: you have to fight fire with something just as hot as (or hotter than) fire.

The Hardest Boss Battles - The Icon of Sin
The Hardest Boss Battles - The Icon of Sin

The Icon of Sin - Doom 2

As you approach The Icon of Sin, it tells you (in backwards speak) that it’s John Romero. I think this has to be a lie, because if that’s John Romero, then who do I have tied up and hobbled in my basement for making Daikatana?

The Hardest Boss Battles - The Devils
The Hardest Boss Battles - The Devils

The Devils - Mega Man

The devils in Mega Man don’t look anything like Steve Jobs, the devil we’ve come to know and love. If you want to imagine what a battle between those two would look like, just do what I did: snort a crapload of whip-its and watch the Apple commercials.

The Hardest Boss Battles - GlaDOS
The Hardest Boss Battles - GlaDOS

GlaDOS – Portal

GlaDOS might be the only endboss who sings you a beautiful tune after you (almost) kill her. I hope the trend catches on, because I’d really love it if Sephiroth would crochet me a fuzzy hilt.

OH HELL YEAH

He's quite right about a few of these characters. I usually play all my games on the hardest mode possible. And I can't remember which street fighter it was but M. Bison was a complete A-Hole because he would do his super special cheapo move called the Omega Psycho Crusher. On hard mode if that move hits.......you're done...hell even if you block your done lol!

Call Of Duty 4: Yeah! Waiting for that helicopter on the hardest mode took me almost 8 hours of play on and off. Insnane!!! And Lubu on Dynasty warriors would get all his energy back if you knocked him on the ground...SO CHEAP!!! tap tap run tap tap run lol! The rest of those games I beat on the harrdest mode no problem...you just suck dude !!! LOL!

Bryan Way - Mon. Apr. 18, 2011 at 07:15:42 AM

Just a guess...

Judging by the descriptions of these "hard" bosses and the fact the he omits several more challenging ones, I doubt any part of this article should be taken seriously. It seems more like a bad attempt at sarcasm.

'Andrea Ang - Fri. Apr. 15, 2011 at 12:42:38 AM

M BISON????

The rest may belong here, but BISON? In SF2? Some of is other incarnations... MAYBE... but definitely not in the original. That guy was easy mode even on the hardest settings. Geese Howard. Now there was a boss. Fatal Fury 1, Special and 3, it took over a dozen tries to beat him. Later games had him be an easier opponent... except Realbout 2 an Special, where he appears as "Nightmare Geese" and is aptly named. In fact, in SVC Chaos, if you play as Geese (available only in console versions), his ending has him offing Bison and taking over Shadowloo. See, even the devs agree he was tougher!

Jordan Roman - Fri. Mar. 25, 2011 at 10:41:09 PM

Number 1

Glados doesn't deserve to be on that list, let alone number one. The true contender for #1 hardest boss definitely should be Ruby Weapon of Final Fantasy 7, no questions asked.

Sam Nestor - Tue. Mar. 1, 2011 at 08:38:11 PM

Red

YOU FORGOT RED FROM POKEMON SILVER!! ***** took me forever. Also, maybe even Terra, Aqua, and Ven in KH II final mix

jinpachi form Tekken.

I think whoeve rmade this needed to play some more games. Any game that makes you fight more then 3 hours on a boss is sorta retarded. If a Boss is "hard" then wouldn't he be able to snap your neck like that? Well Jinpachi does that so he should be at least number 3. He has no pattern so you just have to be aggressive and kill him fast or dodge attack for one hit before he does his instant kill spams.

Vinnie Emilianowicz - Fri. Jan. 21, 2011 at 01:09:57 PM

Icon of Sin

How did the Icon of Sin make numebr 2 on this list. Granted a memorable fight, but hardly difficult, about the only hard part about this fight was figuring out what they wanted you to accomplish. A lot of us did it by accident. None of the Ridley's made it onto this list but Dark Samus did?! Come on...none of these are "The hardest boss battles", the author probably hasn't played half these games.

Andrew Fowler - Thu. Jan. 6, 2011 at 06:27:13 AM

damn yoo internets

Does MMO Bosses count?

If they do, trying killing a boss with 36 other players for god knows how many hours when you play FF11 and go up against Absolute Virtue. Or if you can't gather that many people, try 18 peeps and over 18 hours when you take on P. Warden. P.S. Real world Hours.

Denise Valera - Mon. Nov. 15, 2010 at 01:40:01 PM

Some of the hardest bosses are not in the top 10

I know this is your list but I have to agree with some of them: - Ruby Weapon was waaaaay harder than Emerald Weapon. And I mean WAAAY harder. - You should meet Yazmiat in Final Fantasy 12. You get to fight him around 4 hours, or more. And Omega and the Esper Zoridak as well were hard. - Of course, Omega Weapon in FF8 should be included! - Terra of Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix makes you wish you were never born. Sephiroth's hits were like child's play compared to him. - Nippon Ichi's Baal is one bad*** boss! Well, there are still more, but wish they could have been included.

Brad O'Keefe - Wed. Nov. 10, 2010 at 08:45:37 PM

Star Fox

It took me forever to kill Andross in Star Fox. That guy was a a beast.

Will Levi - Tue. Nov. 9, 2010 at 10:48:30 PM

EMERALD WEAPON!

I spent 3 months doing nothing but training to beat that fag. 3 MONTHS! That's level 99, plus EVERY Materia, Omnislash, the lmited invincibility strategy, every E. Skill, Demi plus Quadra Magic plus W Magic, and he was STILL A CHALLENGE! Lets' not forget the horrific Aire Tam Stomp . . .

Jeff Berry - Sat. Nov. 6, 2010 at 07:42:57 AM

lol glados

That 'boss' was a joke. If I didn't die even once while trying, it wasnt hard. try Dracula in Castlevania 1. or that boss that charges at you in Contra

Kris Lalk - Fri. Nov. 5, 2010 at 05:03:59 PM

terminator 2 Judgement day for the nes

2nd level biker boss on that game above, I couldn't beat him You can try to see if hes harder than simple magruder up there and try to edit him in

Christian Ranieses - Fri. Nov. 5, 2010 at 10:28:15 AM

BANJO-TOOIE

has anyone experienced fighting gruntilda?

David Attardi - Thu. Nov. 4, 2010 at 08:17:51 PM

Dragon Age Harvester Boss

The Harvester battle on Dragon Age Origins.. the DLC Golem add on. The flesh Golem was insanely hard to get the Grim Reaper achievement.. Prayer and Luck and massive caffeine.. I am the only one on my friends list that has this achievement.. Easy 15 - 20 minute battle.. You also left out a ton of Everquest end game boss battles Raid level where 40-50 people would wipe routinely.. The stuff legends are made of.. taking down gods with the dragon loot system at the end... ahhhh sweet DP system

Courtney Ampey - Sun. Oct. 24, 2010 at 09:59:01 PM

Fire Leo

I hate Fire Leo. After I lost to him the first time and learned I had to fight all those bosses again, I quit playing. I haven't played it since. The first time I fought Darth Malak, I did it without using the energy shields because I couldn't figure out how to use them. It was purely random that I beat him at the time.

Angeline Thibert - Wed. Oct. 20, 2010 at 06:02:44 AM

You forgot the worst God Mod of them all

Damn that bastard Maze in Fable. I couldn't land a single hit on that bastard with his magical barrier shield thing.

Brad O'Keefe - Wed. Nov. 10, 2010 at 08:49:39 PM

You forgot the worst God Mod of them all

He was easy. U just had to be patient and hit him at the right time.

Nathan McClain - Wed. Oct. 20, 2010 at 01:35:49 AM

Your psycho

To leave Psycho Mantis off this list if you didn't know to switch your control you couldn't beat him period.

Andrew Averyt - Sun. Oct. 17, 2010 at 12:22:44 PM

YEAH, Abyssion made the list.

Good list in all, but really, GlaDOS at #1? Also, the armor spider from Demon's Souls, **** the Maneaters are 10X hard then that thing.

Toni Garcia - Sun. Oct. 17, 2010 at 11:53:15 AM

had to agree with emerald weapon

Back in the days when I didn't knew about gamefaqs, I remembered beating this monster in sheer luck after maybe half a month of trying . I only remebered Phoenix saving me...

spdeey - Thu. Oct. 14, 2010 at 05:42:06 PM

Excuse me What

How could you not include Rugal, and yet you include bison I mean come on Akuma And rugal were way harder than bison I call this article bs

Kultar Ruprai - Fri. Oct. 1, 2010 at 09:10:49 AM

Kmwob

great post. very indepth and a lot of scope. I did a article recently on 'video game moves you'd love to do on your boss!' for those interested check it out: http://www.mwoblog.co.uk/technology/friday-fun-50-video-game-moves-love-boss/

Darryl Reyes - Tue. Sep. 28, 2010 at 04:08:15 AM

doomrider7

How could you possibly include Bison but not Akuma from Super Street Fighter? He was God Mode on steroids hard.

david halmi - Sat. Sep. 25, 2010 at 12:09:06 PM

hm..

glados is on the list? wow... i guess nobody tried to beat El Oscuro in Rise of the Triad. most cryptic way to win a game.

Steev Newton - Tue. Sep. 21, 2010 at 02:15:40 AM

Parasite Eve 2

The final 2 bosses in Parasite Eve 2 are insanely hard. And there is no break to heal or re-supply yourself between them...I thought the first one was hard(the baby),then realized I was only a quarter of the way through the battle and I had used up nearly all my gear(The only way I actually beat it was to cheat and use a "God-mode"code,and even then it was difficult to beat coz just hitting it enough to kill it is hard work.Damn thing is fast and can teleport too.. This is a highly under-rated game. It was brilliant for an old P.S.1 game. I Would love to see a sequel on P.S.3

Anthony Tucker - Thu. Sep. 9, 2010 at 08:19:17 PM

naw

I dont see how M Bison can be here and yet no one from SNK playmore any Kof Boss is harder than Bison

Tim Holmes - Tue. Sep. 7, 2010 at 08:37:37 PM

Darth Malak

oh i forgot Darth Malak was hard to beat as well, much frustration vented at him!

Tim Holmes - Tue. Sep. 7, 2010 at 08:36:29 PM

Kintaro

I think Kintaro from Mortal Kombat II was the biggest pain in the a$$ boss , that guy ate through my pocket money as a kid!!!

Matthew Cotten - Sun. Sep. 5, 2010 at 11:32:51 AM

are these tuff.....

more like the only game bosses you can think. only a hand full were kind of tuff. Bad very bad list!!!

Kevin Yokoyama - Fri. Sep. 3, 2010 at 10:14:01 AM

WHats the use?

Whats with all of the stupid remarks next to each one? Maybe the writer could have actually used some descriptive language to describe why each boss was hard rather than trying to be overly witty each time? THanks..

Martin Anmarkrud - Tue. Aug. 31, 2010 at 05:21:23 AM

seems sort of random

some of these bosses are really easy to kill.. i mean Death is usually on of the easiest bosses in the newer castlevania games, and robot sonic from sonic 2 is not hard at all : / the end can be killed just by waiting untill he dies from old age, or by sniping him earlier in the game. glados just isn't hard... Malus is a bit time consuming but not at all hard. aaaaand, that was all i had to say.

Mario Castillo - Sun. Aug. 29, 2010 at 06:19:50 PM

I don't like your list

because you didn't put LAVOS!! HE's freaking hard. harder than half your bosses on this list

Billy Striebe - Sun. Aug. 29, 2010 at 05:05:01 PM

**Insert quirky cliched phrase here**

Could have used a top 10. The Top 50 (w/out any explanation of why they're so hard) makes it seem like you're a yay'ed up college student barfing out an encyclopedia's worth of useless video game knowledge. Nevertheless, some funny jokes.

Helder Rodrigues - Sun. Aug. 29, 2010 at 08:11:43 AM

Kessler Really?!

I didn't think Kessler was that hard of a boss! This comes from someone that usually as trouble beating the bosses in games no matter how easy they are.....

Curran Celinski - Sun. Aug. 29, 2010 at 01:57:24 AM

Complete garbage.

I see what you've done here. You've taken a list of some well known bosses, and slapped on a title implying that they are all incredible difficult to beat. I'm not sure if I should laugh at your attempt to compile a list of bosses that are actually difficult, or cry, because quite a few bosses in that list have to be some of the easiest bosses I have ever had the chance to kill. Also, describing the boss is all well and good, but for the majority of the bosses you listed, you failed to even give reasons as to WHY they are as difficult as you claim they are. All in all, nice list. Maybe next time though you'll actually name the article correctly.

Orinsint - Sat. Aug. 28, 2010 at 11:23:55 PM

I hate him!

In 97 I beat FFVII, but I didn't beat Emerald Weapon. I had all my characters maxed out 99999. I still couldn't beat him. I haven't beaten him to this day.

Steve Tomassetti - Mon. Aug. 30, 2010 at 03:36:35 AM

FF bosses are all jokes!!!

All final bosses in FF games are easily beaten. Ruby&Emerald = (KOTR + HP absorb) + (counter + mimic) = when she attacks you, you counter with mimic, and your last action was (KOTR + HP absorb) this makes you invincible. Chaos = level up your Master and cast fast and temper on him. You can hit for over 2000 damage and kill Chaos in one hit. The only ones worth mentioning came from FFVJ, Shinryu and Omega. Also, this list is a joke. What about that sonofa***** guy with the lion head and extending arms that look like dragons at the end of Rygar on the NES? What would be funny is if he listed the boss at the end of Gauntlet. Then everyone would spend countless hours trying to get to it before realizing there isnt one...

Steev Newton - Tue. Sep. 21, 2010 at 01:54:51 AM

F.F.10 .. After SIN you have to do PENANCE

Final Fantasy 10 does not end when you beat SIN. Complete the Calm lands Bestiary, and then PENANCE (the Ultimate boss)turns up as a destination in your ship.It takes a couple of hours to beat him .And you have to summon your aeons at just the right time or else its lights out.unless you cheat and use Yojimbo and are lucky enough to get his ultimate attack.

There is a rumor that Ruby and Emerald weapons can be morphed

FOR RUBY Equip K.O.R.with Mime, HP abs, MP abs,and the most powerful Bahamut. Also Use magic to auto revive your self Not Phoenix as ruby absorbs fire.Kill your friends as soon as they give you all the assistance they can(It has to be a one on one battle with the right character) Your stats must be maxed out and every blow must do 9,999 of damage.I cannot remember how many times you must cast KOR but you can do the math(It has 1,000,000 points) KOR attacks multiple times(14 , I think) and after the right number of hits Ruby only has 10,010approx..One cast of Bahamut leaves him only a couple of points , morph at will.Another toy shinra soldier for your collection. This does not work for Emmy, but the same attacks with KOR will kill it. It's a lot tougher than ruby. Good Luck

Malcolm Malcolm - Thu. Oct. 21, 2010 at 07:04:21 AM

Did you not say hi to Ruby?!?

Emerald was cake compared to Ruby. You could do nothing to Ruby but a whole 45 mins of KotR... using only 1 char. Btw you don't need to be level 99999. Lvl 70+ was enough for me. But only if you had Master Summon, Master Final Attack, W-Item, & some useful purple color balls. Final word: use the guide.

You forgot 2 bosses

In Final Fantasy for NES, the Warmachine was one of the hardest to find and kill enemies in the game. So much so, that if you actually find and kill a Warmachine, Nintendo Power Magazine with STILL put you in the magazine for doing it. Also, Chaos was the hardest final boss battle in ANY FF game because after re-beating all for fiends, you had to pray that you had enough magic spells (you didn't have mana, rather could cast spells a number of times) to beat him. I don't know, much, but I know those bosses are harder than Darth Malak (lightsaber throw anyone?)

Nathan Wilkes - Sat. Aug. 28, 2010 at 01:26:55 PM

Dark Samus

Dark Samus is the "suit" you see, its basically Metroid Prime fused with the Dark Suit and various other weapons and then turned into an organic being. Look at the final battle in Metroid Prime 2 and you see Dark Samus in a transparent form, revealing that it is actually Metroid Prime
