Commonwealth Games: Nigeria's athletes, officials leave for China

A team of 101 athletes and 40 officials will leave Nigeria next week for China on a training tour ahead of the Commonwealth Games scheduled to begin on October 3 in New Delhi, India

Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Patrick Ekeji disclosed this in Abuja.

He stated that the number of contingent would reduce as the athletes and officials registered for the Games would leave China on September 28 for India, while those dropped would head for Nigeria.

The DG maintained that the NSC took time to examine the 17 sports the country has been featuring and concluded that the era of mere participation in major competitions like the CWG was over thus; only seven sports were entered for.

“Since I took over in 2008 I have always ensured that we focus on the areas we can do well. I mean the sports we have prospects and good a thing, we have not been doing badly,“ Ekeji said.
