INFORRM-IENICA - The interactive European network for industrial crops and their applications in the changing millennium/Industry network for renewable resources and materials

Contract nr: QLK5-CT-2000-00111
Project type: CA (Concerted Action)
Starting date: 01-01-2001
Duration: 36 months
Total cost: 930,200 EUR
EC Contribution: 930,200 EUR
Scientific Officer: Ciaran MANGAN
Research topic: 5.2. The integrated production and exploitation of biological materials for non-food uses

Abstract:
Markets for non-food crop products are emerging, but development is hampered by unco-ordinated efforts, lack of sector structure and produce specifications. End-users are often unaware of benefits of and opportunities for non-food products. There has been much 'science push' but market orientation is now the key to success in this sector. This project will characterise markets and specifications for primary produce as major targets, and ensure focused networking and information transfer to the whole industry. The project will disseminate information at meetings; assess potential for non-food crops in EU access/associated states and develop a database of products from plants; verify market size/specification for non-food crop products and disseminate on website and data sheets; extend existing non-food contacts; and measure uptake of non-food crops. INFORRM is one of two workstreams within the major INFORRM-IENICA project, a consolidation of two individual but complementary projects involving 27 countries. There is a vast range of activities and websites managed by organisations at National and EU levels, involving the many products, services and opportunities in the industrial, i.e. non-food crops, arena. These are not currently integrated nor is it easy to search across them. They present a complex and therefore uninviting picture to the many users who could benefit from these renewable resources and materials. INFORRM is the first strategic gateway to aid navigation, leading to the better use of this information and the integration of wider issues of sustainability and innovation. Existing activities, which will continue to provide a valuable part of this sector, will be highlighted, but none of these has been specifically designed to meet the future needs of a more diverse audience. A vision of the members of the permanent association, ERRMA, it will aid the development of a coherent pan-European framework for the industry.
