SignatureNearly all Usenet newsgroups and most Internet message forums allow posters to include a brief (4 lines or less) signature, also known as a sig, to the bottom of their message, provided that the message itself contains useful content and is on-topic. This is a often neglected promotion method, but can be useful because the signature does not need to relate to the topic of the forum in any way - your signature may include the address of your Britney Spears site even if the discussion forum is about ice hockey. This method can be utilized also by people who do not visit newsgroups; if you write a lot of E-mails, use your signature on them. A sig could look for example like this:
-- A good signature includes both your name and the address of your site. It should also have a short description that reveals what your site is about. A short one-line description like in the example above is enough to get those interested in the subject to visit. Signatures are a good way to promote a site a little bit without any real effort, provided that you already are a regular poster in a newsgroup. However, it's not a good idea to start participating in discussions just to get your signature posted - the amount of traffic this method produces is pretty low compared to the time it takes to write a good message. In addition, people who write messages that have no real content and that are clearly written just to get the signature posted are generally disliked in all newsgroups. |
