New To Virginia?
If you are a new Virginia resident, within 30 days of moving here, you must:

  • If your vehicle is to be garaged in the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, or Stafford, or the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas or Manassas Park, your vehicle must meet the emissions inspection requirements before you register your vehicle with DMV.
  • Obtain a Virginia vehicle safety inspection sticker (safety equipment state inspection) as soon as you register your vehicle.
  • Before you can register a vehicle in Virginia, you must certify that your vehicle is insured by a company authorized to do business in Virginia. Your insurance policy must provide the following liability insurance coverage:
    • $25,000 for injury or death of one person;
    • $50,000 for injury or death of two or more people; and
    • $20,000 for property damage.
  • If your vehicle is not insured, you must pay a $500 uninsured motor vehicle fee. This does not provide insurance coverage, but allows you to operate the vehicle in Virginia for a one-year period.
  • If your vehicle has tinted windows, check with the Virginia State Police to make sure the tinting complies with Virginia's sunshading specifications. DMV is authorized to issue waivers to individuals who have medical conditions requiring restriction from sunlight or bright artificial light.
  • Apply for a Virginia driver's license.
  • You may apply to register to vote at any DMV office. For additional information, contact the State Board of Elections at 1-800-552-9745 (TDD 1-800-260-3466). Once you apply, be sure to check with your local registrar to verify that you are registered to vote.
  • Title your vehicle in Virginia.
  • Register your vehicle and obtain Virginia license plates.
  • Obtain a local sticker or decal if required by locality in which you live. Contact your local city hall, county courthouse or administrative office for more information.
  • Reminder: If you are a male U. S. citizen living in the U. S. or abroad or a male immigrant (permanent resident alien) residing in the U. S., and you are age 18 through 25, you are required to register with the Selective Service System.
