Commissioner's Message

Welcome to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

We are proud to offer you new, convenient services as we build a customer service center in cyberspace. Whether it's information or services you're after, you'll find that our web site is constantly growing to meet your needs. Just look at the growing number of online services featured on the left side of your screen. Our latest online feature allows you to purchase souvenir license plates. Just like an actual plate, you can personalize a souvenir plate with a message - a unique gift for yourself or someone special.

DMV's web site includes information you need to obtain a driver's license or child ID, as well as facts about titling and registering your vehicle in Virginia. We offer information about one-stop shopping for motor carrier services and links to related sites. Plus, you can catch up on the latest DMV News.

We offer dozens of downloadable forms that allow you to conduct transactions, even if you're currently out-of-state. If you'd like to visit DMV in person, our web site will tell you about our 73 customer service centers, 25 license agencies and four mobile customer service centers. In addition to finding the address and directions to each office, you can even see the current and historic wait times for each location. When trying to fit a trip to DMV into your busy schedule, this information can be very helpful.

If it's been a while since you visited DMV, you're in for a pleasant surprise. Our renovated offices allow you to sit comfortably while you wait for service and our automated queuing system helps DMV employees serve you quickly. On average, customers wait six minutes and thirty-four seconds for service.

In keeping with our mission and vision, we have combined the best technology with the best employees to make great strides in delivering the ultimate in customer service. In fact, in late 1999 the University of Virginia's Center for Survey Research concluded a statewide telephone survey of more than 1,213 Virginia adults who had contact with our agency during the past year. An impressive 96.1 percent of the respondents -- an all-time high -- were either satisfied or very satisfied with DMV's performance.

As you cruise the net, I hope you'll visit our web site often and look for new features. We look forward to enhancing our site to include more information, more downloadable forms, more e-forms and more online services. For example, you soon will be able to use your credit card to purchase scenic driver's licenses. In fact, our goal is to create a virtual customer service center online that will allow you to conduct any DMV transaction from the convenience of your home.

Finally, as you explore our web site, drop me a line and give me your feedback. I look forward to your comments.

Sincerely,

Richard D. Holcomb
Commissioner
