Waters
The rolling heather upland of the Sliabh Aughty Mountains, the
forests, boglands, lakes, and rivers in the valleys as well as the pastures and
floodlands down to the shores of the River Shannon and Lough Derg give a wide
choice of habitat to support a great variety of Flora and Fauna and are a
dream for those who savour nature.
Visit the hills to experience a sense of freedom with unrestricted views,
delight in the clean fresh air, the many and varied colour schemes produced by
the abundant wild flowers and relax to the sound to the clear bubbling mountain
streams.
And Woods
Portumna Forest Park covers almost 600 hectares and has been
developed as a public amenity, with beautiful forest and lakeshore walks, where
the silence is broken only by the sound of birds, and your companions are the
wary and the curious deer
Sixteen species of wild mammals reside within the park,
including the elusive pine marten, a native dweller which until recently was on
the verge of extinction.
Bird life abounds in the general area and at least eighty five different types
breed here. The changing seasons of the year see the area offering sustenance to
migratory birds from Scandin avia, Iceland, Greenland and Africa. The area is
truly a delight for the visitor with an interest in flowers, shrubs and trees,
many of which are rare and uncommon elsewhere in Europe.
