The Carolina Kids Summer Recreation Program is a summer day camp for children of UNC-CH permanent employees, UNC-CH students, UNC Health Care employees, and UNC-CH General Alumni Association employees. This summer Carolina Kids will enroll campers ages 6-12 in four sessions with approximately 100 campers per session. Carolina Kids is located on campus at Fetzer Gym and operates Monday-Friday, with drop-off beginning at 7:30 a.m. and pick-up ending at 5:30 p.m. Campers will have opportunities to enjoy the gyms, playing fields, swimming pool, and other campus resources, including group visits to campus facilities and visits from special presenters. A variety of age-appropriate recreational, social, and educational activities (including sports, games, and arts & crafts) will be offered. Snacks will be supplied during the day, but campers are required to bring their own lunches and water bottles every day.
The Carolina Kids Summer Recreation Program is sponsored by the Office of Human Resources, Employee Services Department, with the support of the UNC-CH Department of Exercise and Sport Science, and UNC Health Care Systems. A full-time Camp Director, Assistant Director, and experienced counselors will help to make your camper's summer fun and memorable.
This year, four sessions will be offered during an eight-week period.

Parent Affiliation
Each camper must have a parent who is a University student, a permanent University employee, a permanent UNC Health Care employee, or a permanent General Alumni Association employee during the dates in which the camper participates in the program. Parent affiliation will be verified with Social Security numbers via the University Registrar or the Human Resources information systems of UNC & UNC Health Care. Applications from parents whose current affiliations cannot be verified due to missing information will not be eligible for inclusion in the lottery or waiting lists until appropriate supplemental information is received and reviewed.
Parent
Parent refers to natural, adopted, or step-mother/father, or legal guardian. Children of post-doctoral researchers and medical residents are eligible, however children of Adjunct Faculty, Visiting Scholars, and UNC General Administration employees are not. To confirm eligibility, please call Employee Services at 962-1483.
Child Age
The camp is for children age 6-12. In addition, children who are five years old and who have completed kindergarten may attend the camp. However, children who turn thirteen before October 1, 2001 are not eligible to participate in the camp.
Application Fee
An application fee of $20 per session per child is required in advance for families choosing to participate in the camp lottery. Application fees will be refunded after August 27, 2001 for all campers who did not receive a session space in the lottery or from the waitlists. If a family should decline a space offered through the lottery or from waitlists, or cancel an assigned space at a later time, the application fee is not refundable. Families who apply for spaces after the lottery date will be billed for application fees when and only if they are offered and accept session spaces. Note: Application fees will be waived for University families who are awarded camp tuition scholarships. See Scholarship Opportunities section.
Security Deposit
If your child is offered a session space from the lottery, a security deposit payment of $25 per session per child enrolled must be received by Employee Services no later than April 11, 2001 at 5:30 p.m. (For scholarship applicants, a Security Deposit payment of $5 per session per child is required.) Security deposits will be credited to each camper's tuition payment(s) and are not refundable. Security deposits for campers who receive session offers from a waiting list must be received by Employee Services within two business days after a telephone offer has been accepted.
Tuition Rates
Tuition is calculated based on the number of scheduled activity days per session. (The number of days in each session varies due to the Independence Day holiday, and coordination with the UNC fall semester schedule.) Full tuition is required for each session attended, regardless of the actual number of days during the session that a camper attends.
Carolina Kids Summer Recreation Program tuition and fees are used for the costs of equipment and supplies, facility use, field trips, summer staff wages, camper snacks, and camper T-shirts.
| SESSION | DATES | NUMBER OF DAYS | TUITION per CHILD |
| Session 1 | June 18- June 29 | 10 Days | $210 |
| Session 2 | July 02- July 13 | 9 Days | $189 |
| Session 3 | July 16- July 27 | 10 Days | $210 |
| Session 4 | July 30-August 10 | 10 Days | $210 |
The balance of tuition fees must be paid prior to the beginning of each camper's session(s) according to the schedule below:
| SESSION | SESSION DATES | TUITION DUE DATE | BY |
| Session 1 | June 18- June 29 | Wednesday, May 30 | 5:30 pm |
| Session 2 | July 02- July 13 | Wednesday, June 13 | 5:30 pm |
| Session 3 | July 16- July 27 | Wednesday, June 27 | 5:30 pm |
| Session 4 | July 30-August 10 | Wednesday, July 11 | 5:30 pm |
It is important that payments are made to the Employee Services office by the listed deadlines. Your tuition payment confirms your camper's place in a session. Therefore, if your payment is not received when due, your camper's registration will be canceled. This policy allows other families who are on waiting lists to be offered unconfirmed spaces and have time to prepare for attendance. Requests for exceptions to this cancellation policy may be considered only in extenuating circumstances.
In order to allocate the limited Carolina Kids Summer Recreation Program spaces, the camp uses a lottery system. The lottery assigns each family a random number. Campers are assigned to requested spaces according to the family lottery number.
Participation in the lottery process requires submitting a completed application form listing each camper, with correct advance payment of application fees, by the lottery deadline (Friday, March 2, 2001, 5:30 p.m.). After March 2, families can submit application forms without advance application fees. These applicants will be added to session waiting lists in the order in which they are received.
There are additional deadline dates for security deposits, camper forms, and tuition. Refer to the 2001 Camp Registration Schedule found later in this brochure.
Please note: Due to the popularity of our program and our limited University facilities, parents are strongly encouraged to apply to other summer child care programs in the event a requested Carolina Kids session is not obtained.
PLEASE READ DEADLINES CAREFULLY - sorry! No exceptions made.

The Carolina Kids Summer Recreation Program is an equal opportunity program sponsored by UNC-CH. Campers are admitted without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or disability. Reasonable accommodations may be made by contacting the Employee Services Department at 962-1483.
This year the Chancellor's Child Care Advisory Committee has contributed a limited amount of funds available only for assisting eligible University employees and students with the tuition cost of Carolina Kids Summer Recreation Program. Although there are no specific income criteria, camp scholarship funds are awarded first to families with the greatest financial need. In recent years, families with total annual household incomes less than $40,000 have received assistance. Please note: UNC Health Care System and General Alumni Association employees are not eligible for this program at this time.
University employees and students who wish to apply for scholarship assistance must check the scholarship box on the application form.
No application fees will be required at the time of application. Scholarship applicants will be processed for the lottery in the same manner as other applicants. For those who are awarded scholarships, application fees will be waived and a reduced security deposit will be required. In the event that scholarship applicants are not awarded assistance, the full application fee and security deposit will be required for all session spaces accepted.
For more information about this program, please call Employee Services at 962-1483. All inquiries and applications for scholarship assistance are processed in a confidential manner.
Participants from the 2000 program should receive an application in the mail by the first week of February. Human Resources Facilitators will also receive a copy. You may also download the camp application in Word. Otherwise, contact Employee Services at 962-1483.
People interested in camp tuition scholarships should complete a child care subsidy application form and submit it with the camp application. You can download the subsidy application in Word. Otherwise, contact Employee Services at 962-1483.
