The New Terminal at Detroit

Northwest Airlines and Wayne County are in the midst of a $1.2 billion renovation of Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The new terminal at Metro is scheduled to open February 24, 2002.

The new facility features:

  • Hassle-free connections in one terminal:
    An international/domestic terminal with three concourses and 97 gates-more than a 50% increase in gate space.
  • Quick and easy access to flights:
    1.5 miles of moving walkways and two express trams carrying 4,000 passengers per hour.
  • Convenient, state-of-the-art check-in:
    • A 50% increase in ticket counter positions at 106.
    • More than 80 E-Service Centers, nearly triple the number that are currently at Detroit Metro Airport.
  • More luggage carousels:
    18 luggage carousels will be available in the new terminal, more than double the current number at Metro airport.
  • More retail and restaurants:
    The new terminal will feature 125,000 square feet of retail and more than 80 shops and restaurants, plus four WorldClubs. This is more than twice the size of the current retail and restaurants at Detroit Metro Airport.
  • Increased Parking:
    The number of existing parking spaces will nearly double with the opening of a 10 level, 11,500 space parking garage, the largest garage built at one time anywhere in the world.
