New Airport Procedures
Updated November 13, 2001 -- 5:15 p.m. CST
These procedures are updated frequently so please continue to check back often for the most current information.
Northwest/KLM are operating in full compliance with the latest Safety Directives from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as part of an effort to enhance airport security.
When passengers should arrive at the airport:
- For domestic flights, arrive at the airport 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) prior to departure. For international flights, arrive 2 hours in advance.
What passengers should know about parking at the airport:
- Parking is available in the designated parking areas. Some parking areas may be restricted in compliance with enhanced FAA security directives. It is critical that your car remains attended if you are dropping off or picking up a passenger. Unattended vehicles are banned at terminals.
What documents passengers will need:
- Only passengers holding one of the following will be allowed to pass through security checkpoints at the airport:
- A receipt for an electronic ticket - including ticket number; or
- An itinerary generated by an airline available online from Northwest or a travel agency confirming an electronic ticket - including ticket number; or
- Boarding Documents, or
- A paper ticket.
- All passengers must carry government-issued identification with them at all times.
Parents, guardians or assistants accompanying minors or passengers with special needs should check at the airport check-in counter for authorization to pass beyond security checkpoints.
What identification passengers will need at the airport:
- All passengers age 18 and older will be required to
present valid government-issued photo identification (federal, state, or local). Example: driver's license or passport.
- In the absence of government issued photo identification, two forms of identification will be required, one of which must be government-issued. Example: social security card and a WorldPerks card.
- All passengers must carry government-issued identification with them at all times and may be asked to show identification at check-in and during boarding.
- Passengers without proper identification may be subject to additional security screening procedures.
How passengers can check-in for their flight:
- E-Ticket customers may use either the convenient Northwest self-service options to check-in for their flight and print their boarding pass:
- WorldClubs members may continue to check-in at the WorldClub lounge, but
will need proper documentation (see above) to pass through security.
- Customers may also check-in at the airport check-in counters.
- Customers with proper ticket documentation may proceed directly to the departure gate.
What passengers should know about holiday packages:
- Due to heightened airport security measures and the random and thorough nature of security searches, travelers should not bring wrapped packages on-board the aircraft.
- Please include your unwrapped gifts/packages with your checked luggage or
- Ship your packages in advance of your departure
Passengers should know about carry-on and checked luggage policies
Passengers should know that the measures recently announced by the FAA include the following directives:
- Discontinued off-airport checked baggage acceptance.
- Limited access to secure airport areas. Only passengers with electronic or paper tickets, or with ticket confirmations will be allowed beyond the security checkpoint.
- Increased aircraft and airport security inspections.
- Close monitoring of vehicles near airport terminals.
- Restriction on knives of any size on flights.
- Increased passenger security screenings at all airports.
- Requirement that laptop computers be removed from their cases at the security checkpoint. The laptop computer and empty laptop case will be subject to x-ray and additional screening.
Additional information may be available from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Passengers should know that Northwest/KLM has instituted the following additional policies:
- The Unaccompanied Minor, Adult Assistance and Pet Transport programs began accepting customers again for travel on or after September 18, 2001. Passengers for these programs will only be allowed on Northwest and Northwest Airlink (operated by Mesaba and Express 1) operated flights until further notice.
