How to add or remove pages

  1. Look at the image below. It contains letters and numbers. Copy those letters and numbers, in the exact order, into the box labeled Submission Code (not case-sensitive). You will be able to submit up to 5 URLs without having to re-enter the Submission Code. If you are having trouble reading the image, hit Refresh on your browser for a new image.
  2. Enter the first URL you want to Add or Remove in the box labeled URL to Add or Remove.
  3. Click on the Submit button when you have entered the URL you want to submit.
  4. If you have correctly entered the Submission Code, you will go to a confirmation page that tells you the status of your first URL submission. If you have not already submitted 5 URLs, the page will also contain a text box labeled URL to Add or Remove. Enter your next URL in this box and click on Submit. In this way, you will be able to submit up to 5 URLs without re-entering the Submission Code.

Adding Pages to the AltaVista Search Index  Help

You can submit up to 5 URLs to our index using the Add or Remove a Page form above.

Double-check your spelling, and remember that URLs are case sensitive.

Submitting your site for processing does not guarantee your site will be added to the AltaVista index. See submission policies below.

Removing Pages from the AltaVista Search Index  Help

You can remove up to 5 inactive or expired links from the index using the Add or Remove a Page form above.

Only URLs that return a 404 Error code will be removed from the index.

To learn how to exclude pages from the AltaVista index, read Avoiding the Index.

Submission Policies for the AltaVista Search Index

AltaVista strives to provide the most relevant search results on the Web.

In order to maintain the integrity of the search index, we must sometimes exclude submissions that manipulate search results. Examples of such manipulation include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Pages with text that is not easily read, either because it is too small or is obscured by the background of the page,

  • Pages with off-topic or excessive keywords,

  • Duplication of content, either by excessive submission of the same page, submitting the same pages from multiple domains, or submitting the same content from multiple hosts,

  • Machine-generated pages with minimal or no content, the sole purpose of which is to get a user to click to another page,

  • Pages that contain only links to other pages, or

  • Pages of which the primary intent is to redirect users to another page.

Attempts to fill AltaVista's index with misleading or promotional pages lower the value of the index for everyone. We do not allow URL submissions from customers who spam the index and will exclude all such pages from the index.

For more information about our position on spam, please read AltaVista's Policy Concerning Manipulation of Search Results and the Combatting Spam page of the Search Tutorial.

We reserve the right to remove and/or to disable links to a Web site or Web page to which AltaVista has determined, in its sole discretion, that improper steps have been taken to manipulate AltaVista's search results. If you have any questions or concerns about this policy or its implementation, please contact us by e-mail at: spam-support@av.com.
