Guidelines
in relation to Angling and Foot & Mouth Disease controls in the
Shannon Region
Update June 28th
Following a submission from the Central Fisheries Board the issue of import of live bait from GB was discussed by the FMD Expert Group on 28/6/01. The recommendation is that WORMS for use by anglers can now be imported from Great Britain. Maggots and other ground baits cannot be imported from GB until further notice.
Updated May 11th, 2001
We are very pleased that angling has resumed to near normal from Friday May 11th. This is most welcomed by all operators, fishery owners and others in the angling service industry . We ask all anglers to continue to act very responsibly in ensuring that disinfection and other angling guidelines are rigidly adhered to. We especially recommend you to
to seek out of respect and courtesy, permission from landowners/farmers where entry to fishing venues is through or on farmland
avoid all contact with farm animals, or other susceptible species
if going through farmland, close all gates and observe our country code
confine where possible activity to the immediate bankside area of rivers.
if there is an alternative access route not through farmland, try to identify and use such a route.
Enquire at your local angling centre to get advice on contacting local farmers/landowners whose land you may have to access to fish where livestock are located. We have a section at the bottom of our fishing guides to fisheries/angling centres which refers you to local contacts and services in each area. This should be of help to you in identifying a suitable contact person such as a local tourism service, accommodation provider or tackle shop etc. The following webpages provide the referring links

Department of the Marine and Natural Resource
These guidelines are based on recommendations of the Expert Group in relation to FMD controls and have been prepared by the Department of the Marine and Natural Resources in consultation with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation and the Central and Regional Fisheries Boards. The guidelines are applicable to all persons involved in the angling sector including domestic and visiting anglers, fisheries boards, private fishery owners and tourism angling promoters. The content and application of the guidelines will be kept under constant review .
General
Baits
Anglers who wish to use baits of animal origin e.g. maggots, larvae, worms, etc., should only use such baits where they can be sure that all the material has been sourced in the State and not from a restricted zone. Imported baits of animal origin should not be used.
Tourist anglers
Persons travelling from the UK or other FMD infected areas to Ireland must adhere to the following code of practice. Before travelling the visitor must:-
Visitors from the UK (including Northern Ireland) and the Netherlands who have had contact with animals or agriculture-related places or premises are legally prohibited from entering onto any land or premises within the state where animals are kept for farming purposes for a period of 21 days after arrival (S.I. No 160 of 2001)
Fisheries owners and managers
Fisheries owners and managers should ensure that access to their fisheries is confined to anglers who comply with these guidelines and any guidelines issued by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development.
Disinfection Procedures
Operators of angling facilities should comply with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development guidelines regarding appropriate disease control notices and disinfection facilities. In addition, those in the highest risk groups (i.e. those involved in the agriculture and agribusiness sectors) along with people from restricted zones must follow the specific guidelines for these groups issued by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development.
