NEW SALMON ANGLING REGULATION

 WILD SALMON CARCASS TAGGING AND LOG BOOK SCHEME

The Department of the Marine and Natural Resources has introduced a Cascass Tagging and Logbook scheme for commercial and recreational salmon catches. The scheme is to be administered  by the Central and Regional Fisheries Boards. There are a series of leaflets for anglers on tagging their catch and recording relevant details in their logbooks. From January 1st 2001 all salmon rod licence holders shall affix a tag to 

These tags will identify salmon and sea trout (over 40cms), which have been caught legally, and will therefore allow for an enumeration of the catch.

The angler will be able to obtain their licence from Regional Fisheries Board Headquarters and Rod Licence distributors. On payment of the rod licence fee, the angler will be given:

THE  TAG

 

The tag to be used by anglers is a blue self locking device. Each tag is embossed with a code identifying the region in which the tag was issued and number.

THE  LOGBOOK

On receipt of tags the angler will receive a logbook. Details of the gill tags issued to an angler's logbook by the issuing agent.

Each fisherman shall:

SUPPLY OF TAGS AND LOGBOOKS

If additional gill tags are needed they may be obtained from authorised agents on presentation of a correctly filled-in logbook

RETURN OF  TAGS AND LOGBOOKS

Fishermen are required by law to return the logbook and all unused tags to the issuing Regional Fisheries Board or the Regional Board within whose fishery region he/she resides within 21 days following the end of the licence expiry.

The holder of a rod licence should familiarise himself or herself with Part 3 of the Fisheries (Amendemdent) Act 1999 (No 35 of 1999) and the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme Regulations, 2000 (SI.. No.256 of 2000)"

REQUIREMENTS IN RELATION TO COMPLETION OF THE ANGLERS LOGBOOK

The Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources and the National Commission have decided that for the year 2001 an entry need only be made in the anglers logbook when a fish is caught.

The Commission proposes to consider changes to the regulation for the year 2002, and in the meantime has requested Fisheries Boards to implement the provision in relation to anglers logbook in the spirit of the decisions of the Minister and the Commission pending the necessary changes in the regulations.

Consequently, it has been agreed that anglers will only have to fill in the following information in the logbook in 2001:

  1. The anglers name and address
  2. Date of Capture of Fish
  3. River/Lake where captured
  4. Species Caught – (salmon or sea trout)
  5. Tag Details (number)
  6. Disposal

This information to be entered in the Logbook only when a fish is caught
