WELCOME:

We are pleased to be back featuring our normal weekly angling updates on our new website. Reports will be weekly from until the season ends on the Mullingar lakes next October  We wish to thank those who contribute online to our reports and we encourage everybody to contribute weekly. If you have a fishing club we would like to announce that we will soon be featuring a ClubZone to help you promote your club and your clubs activities. We will also have a competitions zone for the same purpose.  In addition if you want we can run some articles on our angling notes here to help you further promote your club or competition, so do please contact us.  See link Become a Reporter. These features add real interest by connecting real people and angling communities to our reports section which are widely read. More on these later !

The trout season got underway on most of our fisheries on Friday last March 1st with some good catches reported in reasonably pleasant weather conditions for the time of year. At the time of writing , weather has become very windy again and this will hamper angling on the lakes in the short term.

John Smith, Chairman, Little Brosna and Camcor Fishing Club email littlebrosna@eircom.net reports this week.

"Recently the Little Brosna and Camcor Fishing Club placed a hatchery box filled with trout eggs on one of our local rivers. The hatchery box was sponsored by the Wild Trout Society in the UK and is presently valued at £700.00 sterling. The box works on the basis of water flowing through the gravel bed which contains the trout eggs. After about 70 days , if the conditions are right the little alevins (baby trout) hatch. Although the box is mainly used for the education of the younger members of the fishing club, it is hoped the box will have a beneficial impact on the local rivers. The club wish to thank the following, the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board and the Wild Trout Society, Tom Connors and Nuala Shortt. For anyone interested in joining the club the AGM is in Dooley's Hotel tonight at 8pm sharp. "

 Week ending 3rd March 2002

The first two salmon of the 2002 season landed on Listowel waters fell to what could be termed as anglers coming back to their roots.

Listowel man Joe Galvin, long time member of the North Kerry Anglers Association and now domiciled in Dublin, made his annual pilgrimage for opening week a worthwhile journey.

Fishing a black Flying C at the Corporals Pool in town waters on Saturday Joe got off the mark when landing a nice fresh Salmon of 7lbs.

On Sunday morning Patsy Ryan of Bunagaragh, Listowel, and now residing in Wexford headed for the Kilmorna stretch armed with a single-handed fly rod for a few hours recreation. Patsy who had been advised that there was no use fishing the fly in March proved the experts wrong. After a lively encounter at Doran’s Stream Patsy landed a 7lb Springer straight up from the tide, another worthwhile trip.

Another well-known Listowel angler John Laide of Ballygologue, Listowel made news on the conservation front. Fishing the Kilmorna stretch on Saturday John landed a whopper of a cock Salmon dressed in his winter finery of brown & crimson. Onlookers who saw the fish reckoned that he must have been at least 20lbs when he came up the river. Well to make a long story short John released him back unharmed to take his chances and maybe next year if luck is on his side he might return to the Feale and do his bit to ensure the procreation of his strain. No doubt latching on to a nice Springer for the pot in the not too distant future, will be a fitting reward to John for his sporting gesture.
