 Lough O'Flynn

Weekending Sunday May 26th

The Shannon Regional Fisheries Ballinlough Office reports on Lough O'Flynn

Conditions were difficult for much of  week with wind and rain being a major factor. Water levels were  described as winter high today Tuesday. There was a very good Mayfly hatch but few fish reported feeding on the fly. Wetfly anglers reported a few fish.  Jerry Larkin Ballinlough, John Mc Guckian and Eric Shannon from Carrick Fergus did quite well totalling 35 fish between them for three days fishing, fish up to 2lbs. Anthony Bagggot Castlerea and Raymond Burns averaged two fish each over a few short evenings. Best flies were Bibio, Claret Bumble and Claret Dabbler. Hubert Cunniffe from Esker Banagher, Co Offaly had 4 fish for 5.5lbs on Sunday evening. on an Invicta. Nigel Coburn from Wicklow had a fish of 2.5lbs.

Lough Ennell & Owel

Weekending Sunday May 26th

The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board Mullingar Office reports for Lough Owel  and  Lough Ennell

Lough Owel: The National Qualifier was fished on Owel last weekend. Weather had a bearing on catches. particularly the second half of the week with conditions progressively deteriorating, evenings cold and wet. Not many anglers on the Lake, and as the week advanced we braced ourselves for an influx of anglers by Thursday which didn't happen. We said it has to be Friday !. Well Friday arrived with storm conditions,  though a few of the 'hardier breed'  braved the elements. At 8:00pm it looked as though the Qualifier might be abandoned. Thankfully conditions improved on Saturday and good returns were reported. 148 anglers fished  the event. 86 anglers caught 161 trout ranging in weight  from 0.75lbs to 3lbs 14ozs

It was very encouraging to see a large number wild/ multy wintered fish seen in the result, It has been proven that the stocking of 1+ browns in August/October three years ago is paying off this year, and we have seen this trend since the beginning of the season.

The Results were

1st Place:  Padric Kelly, Lough Mask    4 fish for 7lbs 11ozs

 2nd Place: Paul Crichton                      5 fish for 7lbs 6ozs

3rd Place: Martin Mc Gorran, Dublin    3 fish  for 7lbs 2ozs

All in all a very good day was had, and congratulations are due to those who qualified

Lough Ennell: The week was patchy up to Saturday which saw an improvement with a good move of trout evident. Mayfly and Welshman's Button dominated the trout menu. This is how it panned out from returns submitted to the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board

Wednesday May 22nd: Timmy Cogan Mullingar had 1 fish of 2.25lbs on Mayfly

Thursday May 23rd:  Michael Healy Collinstown 2 fish 2lbs and 2.5lbs on Mayfly.  Connor Lynch  Mullingar  had 1 fish of 3lbs on Mayfly.

Saturday:  Allan Tyrell  Mullingar had 2  fish  of 3lbs & 3.5lbs on Mayfly  Allan had 10 fish for the day and returned 8 fish. Darragh Toughie Dublin  had 3 fish, 3.5lbs and 2 trout at 2lbs, all on The Welshmen's Button. Les Featherstone  Dublin had 2 fish 4 to   2 lbs, all on Welshmen's button. ( Both Les and Darragh saw a lot of fish feeding at times and at 4:00pm there was a hatch of Mayfly and the fish  went into a crazed feeding spell,  hundreds of fish showed for about an hour or so. Christy Sleator had 2 fish for 2.25lbs & 3lbs on Mayfly

Sunday: The Jimmy Nea Cup was fished. 26 Anglers took part and 9 good fish were caught, results as follows.

1st Place: Christy Sleator  Mullingar 2 fish 1.39lbs and 2.95lbs

2nd Place: Joe Dogherty Kildare with1 fish 2.76lbs.

3rd Place:  Pat Mc Ardle Dublin 1 fish 2.18lbs

Others who had fish were Seamus Eighan Mullingar 1fish 1.24lbs  Pat McBride Dublin  1 fish of 1.85lbs.  Jimmy Stenson  Mullingar had a fish of 1.70lbs.  Des Goulding  Dublin 1 fish 1.92lbs.  Jimmy Murphy Mullingar 1 fish 2.28lbs.  Mr. Paddy Farley from Kells Co. Meath had a fish for 4.75lbs on a  Welshmen's button. Mr. Stan McKeon  Mullingar had 1 fish of 3.75lbs on mayfly. Hopefully these results will continue to improve over the next few weeks.

Lough Ree: A few fish were reported on Sunday 4lbs to 5lbs. Yesterday not a lot of spinner going out. Water levels are approaching winter levels at the time of writing with levels continuing to rise.

Lower Shannon Area

TJ O'Brien TJ's Angling Centre, Killaloe/Ballina, Co Tipperary reports for the Lower Shannon. Tel: 061 376009 Email: tjsangling@esatclear.ie  Website:  Tj's Angling Centre

Trout fishing on the Lake is at its best at the moment with plenty of May-fly hatching. The average run of fish is about 1lb to 2 lbs with some fish of between 2lbs to 4lbs being caught also. All methods were working well early in the month but now the "spent gnat" seems to be doing the business. Lots of fish under 1lb have been caught and released which can only be good for next years May-fly season.

"Photo: Mr. Richard Rose, Bury, U.K. and Guide, Jim Robinson with a 15 lb Springer caught on Castleconnell last week.

Heavy water and high winds continue to hamper the fishing in the Region, however, those anglers willing to brave the elements are getting some results. During the week, Mr. Richard Rose, Bury. U.K. had a beautiful 15lb Springer on the Castleconnell beats.
Mr. Julio Garcia, Spain had an 11lb fish. Reports are coming in of some sightings of the long awaited Grilse.
Due to flood water the Mulcair river has been un-fishable all week.

With fluctuating water levels during the week hitting the river at the right time was the overriding factor on North Kerry Anglers Association waters.

Two anglers who turned their attention to fishing the Smearlagh were rewarded with a Salmon each.

Dan Molyneaux formally of Woodford Listowel & now domiciled in Dromcollogher Co. Limerick had a Salmon of 8lbs worm fishing at  'The Rock' on Thursday.

Another angler whose favourite angling method is worming was also successful on Thursday. Committee member of the Association Ged Horan visited his favourite haunt on the Smearlagh and went home with a nice Salmon weighing in at 10lbs.

Maurice O'Carroll of Asdee continued his good run for the season.

Fishing a 'Flying C' at 'The Pumphouse' in town waters in high water conditions on the morning of Saturday 25th Maurice landed a 14lbs Salmon straight up from the tide.

Angler of the week goes to Association committee member Pat Dowling of Ballylongford who recorded a unique hat trick. Pat showed his versatility in no uncertain manner by scoring in each of three angling methods and in three different locations. An 8lbs Salmon worming the Smearlagh, an 11lbs spinning 'The Joinings' and a 9lbs fly fishing the Kilmorna stretch was Pat's tally for the week. Something of an angling Triathlon in the Olympic tradition, what?
