The aim of this project is to create a catwalk providing 40 angling spaces and 20 further angling stands at the far end of the lake. The roadway and car park are now complete and a number of "pegs" have now been completed on the catwalk. This project is the largest of its kind to have been carried out in the Shannon Region and will be a major boost to angling in the Strokestown area. Angling competitions have already been held at this venue and have shown excellent catches with anglers praising the new facilities.

Survey work on the Brosna system was completed in the spring of this year and was followed by an electrical fishing survey of the Inny system which was completed in early September. A fully costed development programme is now being drawn up and submitted for approval so that development works can be carried out.

Electrical Fishing work was completed at the end of August and this is being followed by a detailed survey of potential pollution points and a Redd count. Initial indications from the survey are very promising with good development potential throughout the catchments. A fully costed development programme is being drawn up from the results of the survey.

Work has been carried out to complete the existing stands and to construct a number of new stands. Work is complete on the existing stands and construction of the timber stands can commence when water levels allow.This project will improve the access to this already popular pleasure angling lake.

Work commenced on this major three year project in July 1997. In stream works have been continuing on the Dysart River since then.

This project features the construction of a catwalk to provide 30 angling spaces. The roadway and car park are now completed and work has begun on construction of the catwalk. A recent stock survey of this lake suggested that there were excellent stocks of roach and perch with good numbers of pike, rudd and bream. This lake has been inaccessible to anglers on all but the north shore and this development will significantly improve access to this excellent coarse fishing lake.

The Central Fisheries Board on 1 December launched a Strategic Development Plan for Inland Fisheries 1998 - 2002 "Achieving Sustainable Growth". The plan was prepared in conjunction with the Regional Fisheries Board and was launched by the Minister for the Marine & Natural Resources, Dr Michael Woods, TD. The purpose of the report is to set out goals and targets for the development of the fisheries resource over the next five years. The plan also identifies the resources and organisational changes that are necessary to achieve its ambitious goals. It is hoped that the content of the plan will inform the thinking of policy makers in determining the future direction for inland fisheries.

The Minister for the Marine & Natural Resources, Dr Michael Woods, TD, announced the postponement of elections to the Regional Fisheries Boards and the Fisheries Development Societies for one year to allow him to complete a review of fisheries structures. In his statement the Minister said "I am comprehensively reviewing the structures of the inland fisheries sector with a view to implementing the necessary degree of change, both legislative and organisational, to deliver my objectives for the inland fisheries resource. My objective is to ensure effective and efficient delivery of service and the best deployment of human and financial resources.

The Shannon Board has announced the issuing of revised regulations for its managed trout fisheries. There are 26 managed fisheries within the Region including Lough Sheelin, Lough Owel, Lough Ennell, Lough Acalla, and rivers such as the Suck, Brosna and Inny. A copy of the revised regulations will be available from permit distributors shortly or direct from the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board, Thomond Weir, Limerick.

Mr Harry Hamer "The Hollies", Greetland Halifax, West Yorkshire, has just completed his 50th year coming on an angling holiday to Lough Sheelin - this must be a record.

He says himself that he always enjoys his trip and in the years when the lake fished poorly " the people made up for it" Harry is well known by all the local anglers and is hugely respected as a dry fly fisherman
