The
spread of HIV/AIDS and the devastation it has caused are far
worse than what was predicted 10 years ago. The far-reaching
impacts of the epidemic are decimating the productive sector and
straining the budgets of many developing countries. The
suffering the epidemic has caused is almost unimaginable. In the
hardest-hit parts of Africa, life expectancy has plummeted and
development gains have been reversed. Worldwide more than 14,000 new
infections occur each day.
Because HIV prevention is the
centrepiece of UNFPA’s fight against the disease, it is being
integrated into reproductive health programmes around the world.
Prevention also encompasses a range of culturally-sensitive
communications, services and interventions aimed at promoting
safer sexual behaviour among young people. Prevention means
making sure condoms are readily available and widely and
correctly used. It includes empowering women to protect
themselves and their children, and encouraging men to make a
difference. Prevention requires advocacy at every level of
government and messages in every medium.
