How our pages work

Top navigation
All of our websites have a link to the four main sections (or directories) for the main website. About, Research, Features and Explore. Using these directories and the search engine, you will find your way through over 4,500 pages of content.

Side navigation
Use the side navigation bar to move within the section or subsection.

Breadcrumb navigation
Most pages also have a breadcrumb, on this page it is "Home > About the Museum > Help" at the top of the white content area. This allows you to move up a level in the website.

Search box
Use the search engine to find content based on key words.

Icons
There are a set of icons on most pages leading you to important sections of the site. These are under the search box. Hold your mouse cursor over the icon for text on where the icon leads.

General Browsing

Use your browser's "Back" button or "Go" menu when you are returning to the last page visited, rather than clicking on a link. The result is much quicker (than using a "Back" icon on the page) as your browser will simply redraw the page from memory, rather then sending another request across the internet.

For further information about web browsing, go to our Searching the Web page.

Accessibility

We have tried to make all pages accessible to all browsers and have included alternatives to images where the information is vital. Older browsers (earlier than Netscape 4 or Internet Explorer 4) may not show the content in the design we intended but all content should be viewable. If you find that a browser you are using has trouble with any content, please let us know via the Website problems form.
