During 1997 the Shannon Board made significant progress in getting approval for Projects funded under the E.U. Tourism Angling Measure (T.A.M.). In addition to the projects on the Inny and Brosna Systems, Lough Allen, Lough na Blaithi and Cloonahee Lake which had been approved prior to this year (and announced previously in Newsreel) the Board has been successful in getting a number of further projects approved. These projects include:-

When completed these projects will significantly improve fish stocks and access for anglers in a number of areas throughout the Shannon Region. The improvement of wild brown trout stocks in the Sheelin and Ennell catchments will be of huge benefit to these fisheries. Ireland boasts some of the few wild brown trout lakes remaining in Europe and these projects will ensure that the premier status of these fisheries is restored and maintained.

NEW REGIONAL ANGLING GUIDE

A new Angling Guide to the Shannon Region has now been issued. The Guide, which is partly financed by the EU through the Tourism Angling Measure, incorporates a map of the whole Region indicating the main species that can be caught in each of the major rivers and lakes. The Guide also incorporates more detailed maps of some of the main angling areas in the Region and includes information on seasons, permit costs, etc.The Guide, which is in four languages, will be a great help in providing information to visiting anglers and is part of a national series of maps all utilising the same format and style.

SHANNON FISHERIES ON THE NET

From February 1st 1998 you can join us on the Internet. The Board is developing a new Web Site which will provide information on the activities of the Board. One of the key elements of the site will be the provision of updated angling returns on all aspects of sport fishing within the Region. While the site will be in operation from February, as they say on the Web, our site will be "under construction" during the coming year and we would welcome your views on the information that you wish to see provided, and any general comments. The Board also has a new E-Mail address at which we may be contacted. These new developments are part of a continued programme to provide a better and updated service to the public. We welcome your participation.
